clay bar question

Can someone tell me what exactly a claybar is, what it does and how and when to use it. I've asked a few people and haven't found anyone that's actually used one, don't know if I need to get one and include it in my detailing of my stang. appreciate any feedback

Clay bar's pull contaminants out of paint. Particles of dirt and sand get imbedded in the paint. The clay will pull that out. If the car has never been clayed, then it needs it. The paint will feel rough. You can really tell if you put your hand in a ziplock bag and gently slide it across the paint.
