2012 GT shifter alignment? Goes in reverse instead of 1st gear.

Looking for some help on this. Not sure what the problem could be. From what I can tell, it is the stock shifter. When going for 1st gear, it catches reverse. To go in 1st gear I'd have to push the shifter straight foward, instead of up and left. Same goes for 2nd gear. Going left and down doesn't go anywhere. Instead, I would have to go straight down from neutral for 2nd gear.
Has anyone had this problem? Is there any type of adjustment for this? Is the shifter itself the problem?

If you have access to a lift put her up and see if the linkage above the transmission is bent or deformed in anyway. Hope someone else has solved this problem already and can submit some useful information.

weird. You should have to push down on a detent and move the shifter far left to get reverse. If the detent spring is bent or broken, that could cause the shifter to flop over far left and allow access to reverse. You don't need heavy pressure left to hit the first gear gate, typically.

Everything looks fine underneath. We've got another GT at my dealership with a Barton shifter so I'm about to swap it over and see if that fixes it.

Bet it does. The shifter problem you have would likely be internal to the shifter box itself.

You called it. Swapped in the Barton shifter and it's good to go!

Never saw this problem come up before, hopefully this helps someone else out in the future.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it looking at it.

Frickin weird....I had no problem in three years of drag racing the stock shifter, over 100 passes. You figure that would find a weak spot, if anything would. I did the usual preliminaries, better knob, steeda bracket, whiteline trans insert but, no falling into the wrong gear or missing shifts I didn't cause myself.

Fuggit, I have an auto anyway now...

Alright guys, got it figured out I think. Guess it's just a matter of the idiot who owned the car before. The upper portion of the shifter wasn't pushed down enough, therefore it would go above the reverse lock-out, instead of pushing against it. After breaking out the BFH, it worked.

Now, on the second car I could not figure it out. I believe it has to do with the spring not being stiff enough or being worn out. If I pull up on the shifter it works fine, but just sitting there it won't. The second one is an aftermarket shifter, not sure what brand. It has a red base with a shiny handle.

Sounds like the shitty SR shifter from American Muscle....It's a cheap Steeda knock-off.
