I'm now using a B&M Hammer wratchet shifter. Far better than the stocker 5r shifter, but it was a pita to install.

So since most of you say that most built 4r70s are using stock internals...is it even worth buying one from a respected builder "say FBperformance" or should I just buy a used on and have a local do it for 1/3 the cost?

A custom bracket or a lot of hacking on the console? Picture please! I could live with the Hammer.

I use a TCI Cheetah. It's a gate type shifter. It is butter smooth shifting. The only thing I didn't like about it at first was if I got a little over zealous on the one to two shift I could push past 2nd into 3rd. I run a MVB so I have to shift. Once I got my technique down it has been fine.

It is not a direct fit so it takes some fabrication to make it work. I know there are better direct fit shifters for the S197

Still running the stock shifter. I ran into another gt500 with an auto here in Houston and he has a pistol style shifter and said it looked good but is a pita at times.. So I'm just gonna stick with this

Mine trans is built but for a rebuild of it the local shop wants the price of what's could just buy a new one with higher HP rating for

Yes. lol. lot of custom cutting, fitting, some brackets here and there...
I got pics, just not uploaded. I'll upload some.

I found a shop that worked on my truck 20 years ago. The same owner running things. He has done several 4R70/Bauman swaps. Very confident he can make a shifter smaller than the quarter stick work. I brought up the 5R55 and he immediately said bad choice. He has had a lot of them apart and not impressed. He has the fabrication and transmission skills to make me a lot more confident in doing the swap. I'm kinda kicking myself for not remembering his shop sooner.

I see there are 3 shaft's in a 4R70 trans. The input shaft, stub shaft and output shaft. At 650HP is there any merit to upgrading these, or are they plenty strong stock?

At 650rwhp, no. If you want it stronger though a non lock up with a 1 pc input shaft is stonger. Mine has a 1 pc billet shaft. You will miss the lock up though when that time comes.

It was my intermediate shaft that sheared on mine, which I was told could "only happen if o/d was engaged or the converter was locked". Be sure and use a billet one, just to be safe. For input and output shafts, I'm using the stock ones.

First, you need a good hole (ok, don't we all, but, please, keep it clean and on topic):

Shifter in place:

Final product:

As part of the install, I covered-up the hole that held the o/d switch (it's mounted in my overhead console). For trim, I used the stock shifter trim ring, glued black plastic strips along the inside to make it cover deeper down to the shifter plate. Looks like it was made to fit :beerdrink:

Install looks good Mike!

Something I did because I didn't have a good feeling about the front u-joint being directly under my hand on the shifter and it being pretty much inline with my body was make a bigger front drive shaft loop.

I made it from 5" .090 wall tubing and it is about 4" long. It completely encloses the front u-joint. It is braced and attaches to the un-used rear trans mount holes on the floor pan. It's probably a bit of overkill but I just felt better with that then a small loop.

I thought I had pics of it but I can't seem to find them, next time I have the car on the lift I will post a couple pics of it.

I know it's not an S197 or even a 4r70w for that matter. But OP here's another's visual for you. Similar to 05moneypits setup, you could modify the console and trim down the bottom of the box a bit to make for a better fit. On the right side there is a gear indicator like your looking for. I'm not really a fan of TCI products, but it's done the job so far. We need to re-run everything because when the shifter is fully forward it just slightly touches the purge switch, (we were rushing) I'm just going to make a bracket when I come across some spare time.

That is the same shifter I have in post #2. Mine is just in the console.

My home-made ds-loop is probably overkill as well. It'll hold up the whole trans! Although, it is bolted to the trans mount as well. But it's far enough back that if the front u-joint broke, the shaft would ride in it.

Back to the shifter, I didnt post pics of underneath. That shifter has a side bracket extrusion for the cable, and I cut part of that off and made a separate cable mount. Otherwise it wouldnt fit in the tunnel under the car.

I have a freddy brown 4r70w it has upgraded intermediate shaft and i also upgraded the input shaft freddy says with my setup it should be good to 1000+ rwhp i also have it mated with a circle d tripple disk billet stall converter. And i have lock up as the previous poster said the one piece setup is even stronger Freddy told me the one piece shaft setup was good to.1200+ rwhp.
I did not want to give up my lockup so i chose the upgrade billet 300m shafts scince my plan was to see 1000 rear wheel one day. 650 rwhp should be s breeze with a mid to upper quality converter the full throttle lockup can destroy a oem standard quality tq converter and that could damage the trans so i would pick a decent converter.
I have had converters fail in other transmissions in past and learned that lesson the hard way.

Might be sourcing a 1000 hp rated tranny pending results ... Anyone ever heard of a place called silverfox transmission out of Missouri ?
