He wasn't trying to be his normal self, it's just that the 5r55 won't handle that kind of power at all.

Yep not even close. The 4R70W, as the 5R55S has trouble with 600 hp, let alone a 1,000.

What are you going to use the car for? Track only? Daily driver? How heavy is it and what tire do you plan on running?

subscribed, even though I kind of know where this is going.

if you are swapping from manual I think it is actually easier to do the 4r then go through the effort of a seamless swap to a 5r.

I myself am planning a 4r70 after the turbo is in

if OD is what you need some people have been putting GM 4L80s and 85s in S197s. So there is another option. I know some guy set up his 4L80 to shift 4th under wot with way north of 1K hp and does DoR racing with it. So there is another option.

I mean, it would be great to keep the 5r because of the ratios and electronic control through the ecu. Would also add a level of convenience for guys that got their car with an auto. But unfortunately aftermarket has not caught up with the 5r yet and I have been down that road of pulling 3 broken auto transmissions out of a car in the same year.

Whats that setup run?
I haven't run the full numbers because I hope my 5R will hold up for a while and the costs would change. I think it can be done for about the same as a good 4R build, if you include an automatic controller for both.

It's not that the aftermarket hasn't caught up with the 5R, they have tried. It's the fact that the actual physical size of the internal parts in the 5R prevent them from being made strong enough to hold big power. I am going to go with the 4L80E, when my 5R goes because it's much stronger than the 4R would be. The 4L80E is basically a TH4000 with an OD, well built they are almost bullet proof. They weigh a little more than a 4R but I don't care about that. I have seen too many 4R's fail and after my 5R goes I am not going to spend money on something that can fail again.

If you want more info on the 4L80E give these guys a call. http://www.hughesperformance.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=61&Itemid=63 When my 5R gives up I am going to go this route, with an automatic controller.
Earl,

I was reading over old Threads on the 4R70 and just saw this one you posted.

A local Performance Shop right near me just did a conversion I'm thinking to the GM tranny.

I was visiting them and the owner ask me if I would be interested in up grading to the GM.
They were in the process of doing a Mustang with it.

Terry, I think it's the way to go instead of the 4R. The trans can be built much stronger than you can build a 4R. You have the same benefits, automatic controller, lockup converter and over drive. If your TCI ever gives up that is the way I would go, especially with someone local that would do the swap.

Earl,

I read the article completely several times and it sure reads like they have the GM tranny down pat.
I would rather keep what I have but if I had to change it seems that might very well be the way to go.
From what I read they have one that is like the stage-3 that is for up to 1,500 flywheel horse power.
Seems to me if one was going to go with it you might as well just go with that one and foot the cost one time.

Same here Terry, I basically have the same trans as you, just not built by TCI. I will keep it and be happy but if it goes south, I will not spend money on another 5R, or the 4R70, I will get an 4L80E setup.
