Thanks for the info Terry, of course please share JPC's response if they ever do respond. There's a write up on the GM Tranny swap in the new MM&FF issue. I don't think it's online yet but definitely in the latest issue I just received this week. FWIW my 5r55s blew up last year and I opted for a Level 10 5r55s reportedly rated to 1000hp and guaranteed for one year. I also went with their billet converter. Of course my car's been down most of the past year so if it takes a dive now I'm pretty much screwed. I keep thinking if I should try to sell my Level 10 unit now while it's still good, or wait till it blows up then buy either a 4r70w or the GM 4L80E, either way it will have a manual valve body and trans brake. Oh well, live and learn right.
Kyle,
I will be sure to post what JPC responds with if and when they do.
(No Worries)
I think the Level-10 from everything I have read is a 1st Class tranny.
I would be just as comfortable with it as the TCI SSF.
I went with the TCI SSF because Brenspeed ran it and Brent had the tuning down-pat.
As most of us know one of the major requirements for the 5R55 built transmissions to live is the Custom-Tune.
Oh I do have a current power rating for the TCI SSF that was sent to Brent a few days back from TCI.
Horse power rating 850-900 ...
So I think I will be just fine based on those power numbers from TCI to Brent.
If you are going to run the crap out of your's.
On the street as well as on the drag strip (Frequently) with like ET Drag Radials.
I would sell the Level-10 and Converter (Now).
I also suggest if at all possible you take the buyer a ride so they know everything works as it should.
The above protects the purchaser as well as you.
I'm sure you have read posts in the Bad Sellers section and you don't want your name to come up in that section I promise you.
That would at least help off-set the total cost of the 4R70 complete install.
I don't have a total cost on the complete install of the G/M 4L80E but I'm thinking it is way up there in dollars.
Also I don't think there has been all that many shops that have done the 4L80E installs.
I think there are many shops that have probably done the more straight forward 4R70 tranny.
I do know from my many very recent discussions with Brent there is a lot of things that are needed in parts to change from the 5R55 to the 4R70.
Once I saw what all was involved and thought about what I really want to use mine for I knew the (Total-Cost) out the door was just to much for me.
If you do decide to get rid of the Level-10 for either one of those other two transmissions I have a suggestion.
Make DAMN sure you get the Total-Cost out-the-door !!!
And I will add this, that you can totally TRUST the Shop that's going to do that exchange and pricing.
Let me know what you end up doing with a PM if you think about it.
Later,
Terry
