Same here Terry, I basically have the same trans as you, just not built by TCI. I will keep it and be happy but if it goes south, I will not spend money on another 5R, or the 4R70, I will get an 4L80E setup.
Earl,

I just did a Google search to see if I could find any S-197 Mustang that a swap to the Hughes 4L80E auto.
I tried all different ways I could think of and never found even one where it, Hughes 4L80E was installed.
I did find this one video below.
I wish I could find where an S-197 Mustang had the Hughes installed.
Or someone on here has read on any Mustang Internet Site where a member has made that swap.
I personally don't care to be the 1st to have it done.

Terry, call JPC, they have done several of them. The main man at the MIR track, where we do our rentals, has a GT500 that he had JPC do a swap on. At our rental he made a couple of passes with it. He said he gained a full second, over his manual setup, from the swap.

Earl, so JPC has done them in our S-197 chassis.
Thanks for the added info.

But I am curious how much Jpc wants to do the job? Or any shop thst has done the swap
Travis, yes price is part of it for sure.
I'm interested as well in what the final price-tag would be.

I wouldn't count to heavily on that 4R at 1000 hp. I figure a 4L80E setup will run about the same as the 4R setup, maybe a little less. It would be a much stronger trans though.

Yea idk scared to ask on a price for the swap

Guys,

I sent an E-Mail to JPC today.
I ask them several questions on the 4R70 and the 4L80E.
I think they very well might reply to that E-Mail.

Question for both of you.
Do you guys think it would be a good idea for anyone of us to start a new Thread on the discussion of the two transmissions ?
Maybe a thread header of something like, (Discussion on the 4R70 & 4L80E transmissions)
Then it would be easy in the future for anyone to find the new thread and posts on those transmissions.

If one of you think that is a good idea and you do start a new thread please list the link to it here so we all can join in on the discussion.
I would think many of the members as well as guest would have interest in that information.

Guys,

Been doing some research on the 4L80E and found a very informative article on it.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmissions/automatic/4l80e.htm

Also in the article it had some of it's uses in cars.

As with its TH400 predecessor, the 4L80 transmission found its way not only into significant GM applications,
but also into luxury marques, including Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Aston Martin
,
as well as less glorious vehicles such as school busses and motor homes.
I did not find any real informative article on the 4R70 tranny.

I did send an E-Mail the other day to JPC.
I got a response that said give them some time to fully reply to my questions.
Basically I asked the pricing for complete installs of the two transmissions.
The 4R70 & 4L80E transmissions.
I also ask them for all information on those installs as in pictures etc,
So waiting for their reply.

Yea and u find anything out yet tiger

Guys,

Below is the actual E-Mail I sent to JPC.
As of yet I have not received any further Up-dates from JPC.
I added the two links to my photobucket so JPC would have some idea of the Bullitt Mustang I own.

Question ???
Have you done the http://www.hughesperformance.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=61&Itemid=63 swap ???
If so I would like what info you can E-Mail on those swaps.
I have a 2008 Bullitt Mustang that was converted from the 5-SP. manual to a TCI Super Street Fighter with a Circle-D billet converter and TCI ratchet shifter.
BRENSPEED (Brent White) did the conversion back in 2011.
Any links you can provide would be great.
This is a street driven 08 Bullitt Mustang not a Drag Racing only Mustang.
I'm interested in a complete installed price.
Also I might be interested in your 4R70 swaps with full auto operation for the street.
Let me see if I can make the real point here in a few words.
(1) Complete installed price for the Hughes 4L80E transmission in my 2008 Bullitt Mustang.
(2) Or maybe the 4R70 complete installed price for same Bullitt Mustang.

I have not done anything with your Company in the past.
There might be a 1st time though.
I don't prefer a phone call yet.
E-Mails are just fine as I am a retired fellow and 69 years old.
Any and all information you can provide me with is what I am looking for.

Thanks for your time guys,

Good deal Terry. Keep us posted on this.
If I do hear back from JPC I'll copy & paste that information on this thread for you guys.

How is your current trans and TC holding up?
I have had mine now since late 2011.
It has been drag-raced as well as thousands of miles put on it traveling.
Plus obviously running it on the street as those years have gone by.
It has, is, still performing just like the day that Manual to Auto conversion took place back in late 2011.
Not one issue with it at all.
I'll also add this regarding my thoughts on what I currently have in a transmission.
My preference would be to simply keep a TCI Super Street Fighter, Circle-D billet converter, with the TCI ratchet shifter.
For my use it has worked out very well even when it has been drag raced on occasions.
I want to keep a Ford tranny in it that would come from the factory.
The 5R55S in mine is simply a built TCI unit.
But to me it is still a Ford unit just modified like the Circle-D converter.
Everything that went into converting from the Manual 5-Speed to the 5R55S is all Ford factory components.
It all looks factory and it all certainly fits like it came from Ford originally.
So in my case I hope my existing set-up can stay even with the soon to be greatly increased power-level.
We shall see how it goes ..........

However if my current set-up does not hold up I sure would like to know what my options are.
I can see that in my situation and use of my Bullitt I might very well go with the 4R70.
I think that (4R70) tranny Fully-Built compared to the 5R55S would be a major plus.
Plus from what I have read on multiple Internet Sites it fits with few modifications.

Hawgman and you other guys,

I have waited to do this post to make sure I gave plenty of time to hear back from JPC.

I have not had any further E-Mails from JPC on that earlier E-Mail I sent them.

If I do hear back from JPC I will be sure to come back here and Copy & Paste their response.

I have made my decision on transmissions.
My decision has nothing to do with JPC not following up on what I ask them.
I have had several lengthy discussions between Brent (Brenspeed) and myself.
I ask Brent to not mix any words to just come right out and tell me exactly what he thought.
He told me point blank what he thought and I agree with his recommendation.
For my real use of my Bullitt Mustang being basically a street car not a drag-race car.
I am going to retain the existing TCI SSF (Super Street Fighter) with the Circle-D Billet converter.
As well as the TCI ratchet shifter already in the Bullitt.
It really just comes down to what the person is going to do with their Mustang.
I mainly am interested in driving mine, car-shows, cruise in's and just maybe an occasional trip to a drag race.
We even discussed the drag-racing use for the TCI SSF and as I told Brent I have made the decision if I do drag-race it in the future it will be with the street tires on it.
We both mutually feel like the TCI SSF has held up since late 2011 with not one issue.
So even with the new power it will have as long as I only run it with street tires the TCI SSF will be just fine.
For those that might read this post and are not all that knowledgeable on drag-racing.
The reason I will run it only with street tires is simply because the tires will break traction way before any real stress is put on the drive train.
And of course that means the TCI SSF also as the tires will greatly soften the Torque going through it from a stop.
The other thing that is going to take place with my TCI SSF will be to ship it back to TCI for a complete refreshing.
Anything and everything that has worn internally will be replaced.
So when I get the Bullitt back it will have virtually a brand new TCI SSF.

For those that are not long time drag racers and maybe new to this site.
If I was going to mainly be drag racing my Bullitt Mustang I would have had the 4R70 much heavier duty transmission installed.
Like I have said it depends on what your application is to which transmission is the better choice.
Especially if your racing it with cheater slicks or full slicks for maximum traction.
Then you better protect your Mustang and go with the much more beefy 4R70 or even the G/M tranny.

Thanks for the info Terry, of course please share JPC's response if they ever do respond. There's a write up on the GM Tranny swap in the new MM&FF issue. I don't think it's online yet but definitely in the latest issue I just received this week. FWIW my 5r55s blew up last year and I opted for a Level 10 5r55s reportedly rated to 1000hp and guaranteed for one year. I also went with their billet converter. Of course my car's been down most of the past year so if it takes a dive now I'm pretty much screwed. I keep thinking if I should try to sell my Level 10 unit now while it's still good, or wait till it blows up then buy either a 4r70w or the GM 4L80E, either way it will have a manual valve body and trans brake. Oh well, live and learn right.

Kyle,

I will be sure to post what JPC responds with if and when they do.
(No Worries)

I think the Level-10 from everything I have read is a 1st Class tranny.
I would be just as comfortable with it as the TCI SSF.
I went with the TCI SSF because Brenspeed ran it and Brent had the tuning down-pat.
As most of us know one of the major requirements for the 5R55 built transmissions to live is the Custom-Tune.

Oh I do have a current power rating for the TCI SSF that was sent to Brent a few days back from TCI.
Horse power rating 850-900 ...
So I think I will be just fine based on those power numbers from TCI to Brent.

If you are going to run the crap out of your's.
On the street as well as on the drag strip (Frequently) with like ET Drag Radials.
I would sell the Level-10 and Converter (Now).
I also suggest if at all possible you take the buyer a ride so they know everything works as it should.
The above protects the purchaser as well as you.
I'm sure you have read posts in the Bad Sellers section and you don't want your name to come up in that section I promise you.
That would at least help off-set the total cost of the 4R70 complete install.
I don't have a total cost on the complete install of the G/M 4L80E but I'm thinking it is way up there in dollars.
Also I don't think there has been all that many shops that have done the 4L80E installs.
I think there are many shops that have probably done the more straight forward 4R70 tranny.
I do know from my many very recent discussions with Brent there is a lot of things that are needed in parts to change from the 5R55 to the 4R70.
Once I saw what all was involved and thought about what I really want to use mine for I knew the (Total-Cost) out the door was just to much for me.

If you do decide to get rid of the Level-10 for either one of those other two transmissions I have a suggestion.
Make DAMN sure you get the Total-Cost out-the-door !!!
And I will add this, that you can totally TRUST the Shop that's going to do that exchange and pricing.

Let me know what you end up doing with a PM if you think about it.

Later,
Terry
