6r80 cooling mods and fluid changes

Anyone running a convertor and high horsepower doing any cooling mods to the 6r80.

How often are you all changing fluid? And what fluid are you running?

The trans cooler and line size are absolutely huge. I would be shocked to hear of anyone upgrading those parts. I believe most are also running the Ford trans fluid.

Terry may shed some light on if he ran anything different before swapping over to the powerglide.

Just using Ford Trans fluid with a circle D .... I have not figured out when to change it .. maybe once a season if there is no issues..

How are you guys changing the fluid on this trans? With the mini dipstick under the car, unless you have a lift that allows the car to be level, I don't see how you can check the fluid after replacing?

I want to change the tranny fluid on mine in the near future but can't figure out an easy way to do it.

Nothing an angle finder, a jack, some jack stands and a transmission funnel with some rubber hose on the end of won't solve.

The suck part of the job is doing it with the car running. The exhaust gets hot. ;)

Circle D 6R80 with a PA pan. It is huge and has a drain plug. Get a hand pump and pump oil in from bottom is easiest way. With the big pan, my trans takes 15 or 16 quarts to fill so I just dump it all in a 5 gallon bucket and start pumping.

The stock trans cooler and lines are stout, and there is alot of oil in the system. If you need more cooling, something isn't right.

While the PA firewall mounted dipstick isn't perfect, I much prefer it to dealing with the OEM one.

I did see this dipstick online and was thinking of buying it but didn't know if it would work with the stock pan and capacity. I always see it paired with the PA deep pan.

I also thought about buying the PA deep pan but didn't know if there would be any clearance issues since it seems to hand down quite a bit further than the stock pan.

You can use that dipstick with the stock pan. Same applies as with the PA pan, only fill it to the bottom half of the range, each time you pour a quart in be sure to cover the top of the funnel with a shop towel, as it will burp and splatter fluid out the top every time it drains down.

I prefer the OEM setup. Once you get the fluid level set, it isn't something you have to recheck or mess with unless you pull the trans/converter for some reason which shouldn't be very often. Nothing really secures it in the trans whereas the OEM stuff screws into place and isn't going anywhere.

no fluid changes?? that my main concern, how often is it needed? also is there a perfered fluid over the ford stuff? i dont drink the amsoil koolaid...

It's all relative to what you are doing. Some may go 60K+ before changing due to maintenance. If I spend quite a bit of time at the track beating on the car then maybe I change it more often (I have never done a full fluid change). You shouldn't have to treat trans fluid like motor oil.

BTW - There is nothing wrong with the Ford trans fluid and no need to run a vanity oil/fluid.

If you are concerned about your trans, monitor the trans oil temp. If you don't get into the 200's I would say you are fine. General driving around should be in the 160-180* range. Also, make sure you have a good tune. That goes a long way to trans longevity in these cars. I would also recommend calling Chris Sehorn @ CircleD and chat with him about it. He can give you an idea of what he has seen come through his shop and where the failures occur and from what.

I ordered this dipstick so I will see how it works. I may get the deeper pan later on.

There's a threaded adapter that screws into the trans, then the dipstick tube itself is double o ringed and slides into the adapter.

Okay, thanks. Do you have this dipstick? If so, where did you mount the top part of the dipstick. I think from something that I read, is that you are supposed to drill into the firewall and use two bolts with nuts on the inside of the firewall. If so, I don't want to do any drilling so I will have to come up with a different method.
