Be careful with stainless steel lines

Recently I upgraded to stainless steel lines on all four corners. Bought the kit from American Muscle because the lines came with OEM like mounting brackets and were a straight swap.

Long story short, the new lines weren't as thick as the OEM lines where they connect to the caliper. I found that out the hard way. Because of this my banjo bolts were acting as set screws on my rear caliper pistons.

I had to cut an eighth of an inch off the end of my banjo bolts to get everything back correctly.

My advice: measure the thickness of the new lines before you out them on, and take the difference off of your banjo bolts.

Must have been your mechanic skills. Several people run Russell's with no issues lol.

Why didn't you braid your own lines? They are a pretty simple design, just a tiny bit more complicated than spacers.

Lol just saw this. Good one.

On that note though, the Sooner Racing Team that competes in formula SAE makes their own brake lines. They buy the line and put the fittings on themselves.

That's for a custom application though. No need here.

I think you just did not install them properly. I have installed sets on my 06 and 08 with no issues at all.

I'm not sure how you install them incorrectly... Put the washers on and torque to spec. Make sure the lines are clocked correctly when you do. That's about all there is to it.

That was confusing. I think you are trying to say the banjo fitting at the end of the line is thinner vs. stock on your aftermarket kit. Did you actually measure and confirm a thickness difference? If so, what is the difference?

Were the crush washers you used the same thickness as OEM?

Did the new kit come with shorter banjo bolts that you chose not to use?

Did you use a crush washer on BOTH sides of the brake line banjo fitting?

The answer to the above will clarify the issue you experienced for others.

The new kit did not come with new bolts.

I used the thicker washers on both sides.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing a head's-up. I hate kits that aren't well thought out and have hidden issues.

Honestly the round banjo fittings pissed me off some, and of course the banjo bolts hitting was an issue, but I love that the lines are DOT approved and have the brackets to bolt up in the stock location.

ALL lines have to be DOT approved to be labeled and sold as brake lines.
Federal law.

Even your local companies that are dealers for companies like "BrakeQuip" are given their very own DOT number that has to be swaged (look it up) into each and every brake line they make. That dealers number can be found where the fitting is pressed into the line. Typically, such places that make & sell brake lines are hydraulic hose shops.
