Blew the rear end at the track

i just really don't know which to go with to be honest...shes a weekend driver and goes to the track...i do like corners on occasion...i just don't know the pro's and con's between the two...

I couldn't make my mind up either at the time, but i got the Detroit TrueTrac without knowing. My girlfriend over heard me and my brother talking about the product when my stock posi was taking a shit and she bought me the TrueTrac for Christmas last year. So I wasnt going to return it for a Locker b/c that would be rude against her, & i wanted the trutrac anyways.

Well a tru-trac is more of limited slip and used to be called a soft locker (you dont feel it engage). With a detroit full locker you can feel a difference. When ever you have power going to it both tires turn at the same time and it only unlocks when there is no power being put to it. Really a full locker can cause some tire wear (like the burn outs you do dont? lol) and driving in a wet lowes parking lot can be tricky (fun but tricky). I recommend riding in a some cars that are equipped with both before you jump into building a rearend. And dude google can be your great friend and just research the crap out of it. Hell I would be there in person to show exactly how both work.

The locker does take a little bit of an adjustment in driving style, especially when trying to pull into a parking spot. The first time you hear it ratchet when reversing can be tough on the nerves as it sounds like something is coming apart but you do get used to it.

It also doesn't really effect turning radius or corning at all. Hell I am pretty sure it is the preferred diff by alot of racing classes, and all forms of racing. I believe in beefy parts, plus its a piece of mind that you don't have to worry about that ever again lol

My TrueTrac finally gave up the ghost, so a Detroit Locker is going in as I type....

Read up on traction aids, the detroit locker is a much much stronger than the worm gear style tru-trac..... honestly the tru-trac is a POS and is alot like the GM design of the limited slips (F-bodys and what not)..... and yeah they stuck too in my opinion.


And nice vent hole in the housing....... does that increase MPGs??? I want to know more about this mod.

alright im ordering the parts tomorrow...the 9" i looked into is going to be about 1K to 1500 more than getting a new 8.8 and rebuilding it...so

new take off 8.8
detroit tru trac
moser axles
new 4.56 gears (what i had before)
spherical bearing for UCA
plus all necessary parts for proper installation...

anybody have any comments on richmond gear sets? or should i stick with ford racing?

Richman gears are noisy, if you don't mind a little noise there fine, I have a set of Yukon 4.56 I'm removing from my car and replacing with Ford 4.56 because of the noise. if you don't mind a little gear whine I'll make you a heck of a deal on the gears.

yes they do but its 2699$ with a spool and 4.10s before truck freight shipping...a little out of my price range

Is your a car mainly a street car? Do you run a super sticky tire at the track? how often do you run at the track?? those are all questions they prob asked, and they felt you met those requirements, but I'm the kind of person where I'd rather know my rear was bomb proof.

WOW I sold my take out rear end way too cheap if there going for 700+. Did you break any axles or just the carrier? I'm using the Detroit locker and love it. the only noise I notice is when turning sharp there is a little clicking noise. As for brand of gears I always hear ford racing are less likely to whine but I have had Richmond, ford, and Motive's and all were quiet for me. It might be more in the installer than the gear.

I've got the Richmond 4.10's in my car and they are a little noisy, nothing bad though. I believe there are 3 levels of the richmond gears as well, a cheap one that's not durable, a middle range one which I went with and their drag racing ones. Don't do the drag ones though as I've heard they are softer and not good for a car that's street driven or something along those lines.
