Can anyone in California explain what the hell the CARB no. is?

I have a 2008 Bullitt, and would like to put a supercharger on it.

I was told that I could get a tune to pass emissions no problem, but he asked me what to do about the CARB number?

I have tried to read up on this, and a lot of what I find is directed at diesel trucks and engines.

I did find something about grandfathering in mustangs up to 2007, and maybe some 2008's but that's all I can find.

Help!

A CARB number can be assigned to a part after it passes the through the process. Whipple, KB and probably a few others have CARB numbers for their kits. The tuner is part of the package.

Just get a carb approved supercharger kit. It's a CARB exemption number to be exact. It means that the manufacturer had the setup tested and it passed emissions.

Paxton and Vortech weren't able to pass for a 2008 Mustang. IIRC your choices would be FRPP Whipple, Procharger P1SC, Roush, and maybe KB. I think Whipple also has a carb number but you have to send the whole ecu into them for flashing vs the FRPP Whipple that comes with a tuner. Whipple is using the Ford Racing tune when they flash your ecu.

Do an internet search and the carb exemption page will come up. From there you can search what is approved for your car.

I recently went through the whole CA smog thing a couple of mounts ago. Best thing you could do is to get a CA smog approved kit and be sure to maintain all of your records along with the CARB stickers. I have everything in a folder in my car and it made passing CA smog no problems. Just so you know for our cars they no longer to a sniff test just a visual inspection and OBDII readiness check. They want to make sure everything is in proper working order.

As others have said you are limited to superchargers that have been approved for use with a CARB exemption order number. If it doesn't have the e.o. number it isn't legal for on road use. You have to operate within the confines of what will pass a visual as well as a readiness check.

I would go with the FRPP Whipple personally. It is a well refined system that Ford spent a lot of time and money developing to work within the limits of our stock motors.

I've had a few different setups. If it has to be carb legal I'd go with the FRPP Whipple for a positive displacement blower or the Procharger for a centri. The Roush TVS would be a candidate but I've never owned one so I can't comment other than to say it looks like it would fit the bill.

The FRPP is a really good product. Especially the tune. It drives, starts, etc, just like a stock car but with more power. The big limitation is the inlet elbow. It limits effective max boost to around 16-17psi.
