Car Eerily Creeps Back Slightly When At A Complete Stop And Brakes Applied

My car has done this twice before I put the transmission in Park.

Any ideas if this could be a:

1) Brake Issue

2) Shifter Linkage (shift selector seems to move much easier between P R N D)

3) Transmission (hoping not)

There is no way your car should be creeping anywhere with your brakes applied fully unless you are in drive/reverse and doing a forward/reverse burnout and dragging the front wheels.

Not sure I completely understand what you mean by this but the only thing I can think of is when you place the car in park and do not set the E-Brake, the car will lurch back due to the slack in the drivetrain and if that is the case, that is completely normal.

I definitely didn't have the E-brake on.

I applied the brake pedal and my car came to a complete stop but then it ever-so-slightly creeped backwards.

I was in a parking lot on a fairly level surface.

Maybe its the Eaton True-Trac differential?

I have noticed when I park my car without the E-brake on, I get out of the car and hear a very slow creak coming from the vicinity of the rear wheels. The sound "creaks" then stops and "creaks" again in that pattern. It's not a very loud sound. Maybe it's a normal sound.

Why are you parking without using the e-brake to begin with? Basic good safety habit...should a manual come out of gear or an auto slip out of park you are covered.

But I am interested to see what is causing this creep back issue, obviously you wouldn't have noticed it with the brake set.

I know it's good safety-wise to use the E-Brake.

I normally only use the E-Brake when I'm parking on an inclined surface.
I'd say about 95% of the time I park my car on a level surface.

Someone told me if the brake pads and rotors are really hot after hard braking and then you go to park and engage the E-Brake this could cause some sort of damage. I don't know if there's any truth to that.

What about this myth>>>

IF someone ran into your PARKED car and you have the E-Brake on, your transmission/drive-train could suffer more damage if it's moved by that reckless car than if you had no E-brake on. But I know there are arguments for and against everything. Well if you didn't use the E-Brake then you car could end up rolling away and totalling itself and other vehicles.

You sure the car was actually moving and it wasn't that weird optical illusion of your car moving when the vehicle next to you slowly moves forward?


Also, did you smoke any Peyote right before this happened?

I never use the hand brake. I just park it in reverse gear and turn the wheels towards the curb. The engine compression is strong enough to hold it and I don't like having my handbrake freeze. If its really steep I put a brick on a wheel.

You obviously have never had a car pop out of gear! I too put it in reverse (unless it is facing uphill, then I put it in first gear) but I always use the e-brake also. Of course, it isn't as cold here in GA in the winter either, so the brake freezing isn't anything I have had to consider.

Learned stick (and driving) on a Saab 900, had to put in reverse to get the key out (transmission lock). I've never had a car pop out of gear, but I have seen people park their car in neutral and have the handbrake freeze or the car roll away because they forgot to pull the handbrake.

I've never understood why people park it in neutral with handbrake.

came outside one time to find my rx8 at the bottom of my driveway, trans in 1st and handbrake on. Was winter and there was ice/snow on the driveway.
So glad it stopped at the bottom of the drive and didnt continue, freaked me out though.

There's this intersection in PA where your car will roll backwards even when it's in drive because there are ghost kids pushing it.

Could be what's happening here?

Park/in gear and parking brake set, always. Realistically how many frozen handbrakes are there, and I'll take that inconvenience over the chance of car popping out of gear.

if it's creeking and slowly rolling with the handbrake on and a 07 or early for the love of god, change the left and right parking brake cables. they get stuck in the sheaths and won't fully engage the brake. soon they freeze up and you break the little ball off the end of the main cable like i did..... you then also have to pay the $120 for a new brake handle because ford doesn't make the main cable separately.....

and its a $90 fix if you do it now.....
