Hey guys,

I just bought a 2011 GT about a month ago.

All has been pretty good, but I will occasionally get the rotten egg smell from the cats. Ive noticed this 4-5 times when driving harder, but not everytime I do so.

The car only has 79k on it.

Is it common to need to replace cats at this point?

Would this work or should i stay away from the ebay special?

I can do it myself, i have a lift.

Eventually i will buy headers but id like to do some other mods first like suspension stuff.

Thanks

Joe

It has been my experience that the rotten egg smell is not from converters needing replacement. Bad converters will throw a check engine light. Sometimes, even new aftermarket ones throw P420/430 codes.
A leaky egr used to be the main cause of this smell, but the coyotes dont have an egr valve.
Is this car tuned?

Buy your gas from a different station and see if that helps. You just may have gotten some high sulfur content gasoline. Any smoke from the exhaust and what color is it? New catalytic converters often have a sulfur smell from the exhaust because the catalyst is very active when new.

Thanks guys,

To be clear I dont have any lights on, i can scan for pending codes.

No smoke from exhaust. I just filled up from a different station so will see if that helps.

I will get the car on the lift and look for any signs of modification.

When you say the cats smells when they are new, it made me think that maybe the cats are new, or they were removed previously and put back on before the PO traded it in

Sulphur smell is absolutely normal, occasionally. Nothing to worry about. If it's only occasionally. If you smell it all the time, you probably have something going on. Or your battery is leaking.
