new guy here, but I had the same problem until yesterday. A month or so ago I had Spohn Del Sphere LCAs installed. Clunk clunk clunk. And the gear whine was crazy. everytime I shifted or hit the gas and the car rocked back it clunked hard enough to feel. I pulled those $300 LCAs off yesterday and put J&M $99 ones on. Soooo much quieter, no clunk and no gear whine and tires are still planted just fine. Spherical ends make noise and clunk. thats the only determination I have come up with.

Well, I've got the J&M upper and lowers and get clunk when I shift or hit the gas. Didn't get the J&M Upper Mount though. Also, my car is lowered. That may be the difference in some cases.

Same here, turns out it's the two piece drive shaft. With the new LCA it transmits the noise more.

Hmm, I guess that might be a possibility but doesn't really explain why some have it and some don't. Also, for some of us, as bad as it is then it should be noticeable with the stock control arms as well.

Some drivetrains have more slop than others.

As for the noise with stock parts, the stock parts do a very good job in hiding the various noises (road noise, gear noise, drivetrain, etc) on a stock vehicle.

Finally

after all the Jack in around. The BMR gear fixed the issues
All of my noise was related to the UCA

I glad its all fixed. Lets see if the jam nuts come loose after some miles

THAT is what I like to see, sir.

I am glad our Arm and Mount worked out for you. I knew it would, as long as everything was put in and tightened down properly.

If you have an issue with the nuts, you can throw a little loc-tite on them.

Have fun!

I have about 10k on the bmr upper and the noise has become apparent. I didn't use lock tight bit torqed the shit out of of it, I think it was 135 lbs? Anyway, not sure if its the upper of the shaft, but its annoying.

Upper Arm and Mount, or just Upper Arm? Please give more detail.

Did you buy them used? Have they been on the car for a long time, or were they recently installed?

I'd be happy to help ya figure it out. It is usually something simple.

I got them new. It was the arm and mount (had to take the rear seat out and that bolt 22mm I think was so damn tight I almost gave up) Any way I mentioned my concern about the clunk at time of purchase so I wouldn't have got just the arm. Although in hind sight I wish I would have got the adjustable one.

It's only been on the car for about 6 months or so but about 10k miles. It didn't really make much noise at first but has gotten worse over time. I first noticed a sort of rattle (same sound but faster) when I would go over a bump with the clutch in. That's still there only worse and the clunk is apparent when I slightly let off or get on the throttle. I know it is either the drive line or the upper arm but I'm not sure what is the best way to tell?

Nasty
Just try to pull the upper mount out of the car
Assemble both upper and UCA on the ground and torque to 135lbs
reinstall and tighten the shit out of the Jam nuts
and if your pinion angle was good before it should still be good if u dont mess with the n UCA
Good Luck

I installed UMI upper and lower control arms last year. The upper didn't do anything except transmit all the rear end gear noise straight into the cabin, driving between 60-80 mph was irritating as hell. I removed them and put the stock UCA back in after 2 months. Then at about 3 months the clanking began. It's gotten progressively worse and a month ago I was able to reduce it by greasing the lower control arms again (the directions say only grease once per year). Now they are clunking worse than ever and I now have a pair of BMR lower control arms to replace them. I could probably just replace the bushings but I don't want some crappy arms that need new bushings every 6 months in order to be quiet. Hopefully the BMR arms will be higher quality (everything else I've bought from them has been awesome).

So in short, I don't think the UCA will fix anything and may just create another issue.
