Norm,

I understood the problem with the non-linear throttle mapping. In fact, I have a dyno chart from True Street (same folks who tuned Terry's car) showing exactly what BAMA was doing to make the tip-in response even worst than stock. I went to TS for a dyno tune not for max power, but to smooth out the throttle response.

Supposedly the low RPM pinging issue some have experienced with the FRPP Tune can be resolved with an oil catch can for those with the problem. Something about too much oil being recycled back into the Intake diluting the octane rating.

Read that too.

I've never had any pinging. I'm also not using the stock airbox; I'm using an AEM that doesn't require a re-tune. I'm not sure if that affects it.

How bad is the pinging? A little low-speed knocking isn't the end of the world. If it's loud at low speeds or continues to higher engine speeds, then you might have a problem.

I have catch cans on both the PCV and breather hoses, and I still get occasional pinging, but it's only when tipping in at low engine speeds. I think it's just the calibration.

Unfortunately I cant answer this as I don't have an FRPP tune, or any tune for that matter.

My car with the factory ECU mapping pings when the weather starts to heat up (usually any temp above 85 or so). I'll be picking up a oil catch can shortly to see if that changes anything but when I experience it, it is only during the first few seconds of aggressive throttle tip in then it goes away; until I do it again :dunce:

I run Wawa 92 octane the majority of the time:piss:..."hides from the shoe being thrown inbound" because that is all that is near me to choose from. I've tried other brands as well and some are better then others at keeping it to a minimum.

I suspect that other folks like myself who have pinging with the OEM map are probably also more likely to be the ones who experience pinging after a tune is applied.

My guess is that the ones bitching about a pinging issue after the FRPP tune probably had that problem even before the tune came into the picture. They just never pushed the car hard enough to notice it prior to the tune being applied.

We all know that in most cases once a tune is applied full retard mode is in effect. This of course would increase the likelihood of a pre-tune pinging issue that went unnoticed before to suddenly come to the surface.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it :beerdrink:

I hope your theory is correct. I am on stock tune and have not run into pinging. I've been using 91 for a while and started out on 87. Now with the FRPP Track Cal tune out and some peer pressure here, I am thinking about a tune. Since it's also a DD, I don't want any issues.

The top end of these motors is noisy, as well. You've got 8 injectors, 4 camshafts, 2 timing chains, and 32 valves rattling around in there. I suspect what some people think is "pinging" is simply valvetrain noise.

Shouldn't the knock sensor take care of any ping?

I'm not worried about it, got my pro cal today and will load it tonight. Looking forward to correct speedo readings, no more 1-4 shifts, and a throttle that is hopefully connected to my foot. Track days this weekend at Gingerman.

Donny, it's a bit of a cruise, but you may want to talk to Bryan Stepinski at Sutton Ford in Matteson. .

Dave, I did give this some thought but easy button was to buy something.

So I bought the Ford Racing M-9603-MGTB and it is installed now. I didn't see cheesus or burn the tars throught 4 gears but....

Should have bought this 2 years ago. I like data but I don't have any here, this was all about feel for me anyways.

Much improved throttle response, still a slight lag but it is very minor. I don't know about 60 ft/lbs of torque but between the added torque and throttle response those slow autox corners where you should have grabbed first but were too lazy should be less painful now. Actually I was surprised by how much better the bottom end felt, almost like the LS3s I put in everything here at the shop.:beerdrink:

For me the biggest thing is engine braking, as in now there is. It wasn't really noticeable under 3K but I made a couple of 3rd gear pulls to about 5K and giggled like a schoolgirl when the car nosed over after lifting. This has been my only significant complaint about the car and now its fixed.

It didn't ping, but it was a short run and it is cool out here today. There are calibrations for 91 and 93 octane, set on 91 now.

Never had a tuner before, didn't realize I could read and clears codes with this thing. That's a nice bonus.

There may be more power out there but I don't care. I could probably get it _perfect_ with a custom tune but for a simple, off the shelf solution that does exactly what it is supposed to do, I couldn't be happier.
