Do the 5.0's like more gear?

I just installed a JLT CAI, BBR offroad x, and BBR tune, and there's an amazing difference! My question is this.....my car has 3.31's, but I'm really wanting to go to at least 4.10's, but leaning towards 4.30's. I already have a set of 27" tall drag radials for the track as well. So....do these cars like the gear???

They do like a little more gear. With a 27" tall tire you wouldn't want to go any bigger than a 3.73 gear unless you wanted to shift to fifth gear when making a quarter mile pass.

Even with a raised rev limiter and shift points? I guess I need to enter everything in the ole gear calculator.

Now, even with the 3.31's, on the 1-2 shift it just blows the tires off til the 2-3 shift. Can't imagine what it would do with a real gear!

The gear ratios in the 6M in the new 5.0's are not what you might expect them to be. When 4th is 1.32 and every Mustang before was 1:1 in 4th the game has changed.

A car with 4.30 in, let's say, an '07 in 4th is 4.30. A 5.0 transmission with 3.31's is equal to 4.37's in 4th.

Wow! I keep forgetting about the tranny ratios. So 3.73's or 4.10's at the most, especially if I plan on spraying it in the spring.

If you are only using the first 4 gears for acceleration, I'd say yes. If you want to use 5th (which is 1:1) you could go with more gear.

IMO 5th and 6th should be reserved to make the car streetable at high way speeds.

with 3.73 a 28" tire would be my choice that's what I am going to use. My car with the 3.73 option goes through almost off the limiter! So a 4.10 with a 27" tire you would have to go to fifth!

3.73, with stock tires, mine willl go throught the traps in 4th, right on the limmiter, and mine has a raised limmiter. On 28s it has a littlle more, but 3.90 is as far as I would go with 28s mine is trapping 119 now

I'll be running a 295/45/17. So I think I'm gonna go with 3.73, especially since I plan on spraying. The Boss intake will move my shift points up a little, so that will help as well.

Good call 3.73 is the most, I would wait till you got everyhing else done, and see what it does at the strip, and see how close it is, and figure out what would be the best gear, on spray 3.55 might be a better choice

I agree. I've only had the car a week and a half, and I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself. The 3.31's actually dont feel that bad. I may just hold off on gears right now, put the plate kit on in the spring, and focus on my N/A times, and go from there.
