file fit rings & torque plates

I'm finally ready to start file/fitting my SS rings. I understand the best method is to use torque plates during the fitting process. However I found my ring squaring tool won't fit down inside the torque plates! Arghh! Anyway that being said I can try to square the rings up best I can using an old piston which may not be perfect and therefore could be off the same as not using the torque plates, what would you do?

*My build is a 302 forged stoker, ported heads, F1-A Procharger w/20lbs on e85.

I have never heard of using torque plates for anything other than boring/honing, much less file-fitting rings. You're supposed to use an old piston, upside down, to fit the rings down in the bore to measure gap.

It's usually recommended by the ring manufacturers if the block was honed with a plate. Try to keep everything the same. Todd reported a size difference when comparing with and without.

I'd just use a piston.

I've always just used an old piston until I tried out a ring square tool, it makes the job much easier and more accurate as you dont have any potential slop from the piston being able to rock inside the bore. I've checked my own work using both methods and found a small difference in size.

If the piston is lose in the bore you can try raping it with some tape to take up the slop. Our race engine is honed with deck plates with 180 degree water running through it.

Now wrapping one makes a bit more sense.
