Hey everyone, question about HID bulbs on my 09 Mustang,

A couple years ago, the car had the ford OEM HID assemblies installed and the halogen lights removed. When I bought the car, I’ve noticed that the headlights flicker pretty badly and it makes it hard to drive the car at night. However, what’s really weird is I’ve noticed when I press the brake pedal the flickering immediately stops. When I release the brake pedal the flickering comes back.

I’ve also noticed the flickering doesn’t happen at all when the car is off and you turn on the lights, it seems like I only have the issue when I’m driving.

Has anyone seen something like this before or have any ideas what to run down? If the flickering started when I pressed the brakes, I would believe that I had a problem with a bad battery or with a bad ballast. But since the opposite is happening, I’m not sure why the brakes being tapped would stop the flickering.

So if I am understanding correctly, the car was factory built with halogen headlights and someone had OEM HID's installed?

the only and big question is who did the wiring and how was it done? The old and only method was using a factory HID harness which still required the use and wiring of resistors and what not.

When I found some OEM HID's for sale locally for a steal i bought them and then did research on wiring them up. I found a clean and reliable way to get it done for around $100. plus it is easily removable if I need to and go back to halogen.

start tracing the wiring from the headlights back. see what you uncover.

Double check the Zenor diodes that are soldered in when the factory harness is modified. If that's a cold joint or a failing joint, you can experience flicker as it lets current creep back. Like JWood said, start at the front headlight harness at the fusebox and see what's up.
