Doing this is always a safe option. It should still be checked, however there are very specific tools needed to Properly check pinion depth.

holy crap,,
almost a grand for a kit imo you dont need, as there are plenty of other ways to check pinion depth ,,
heck even on LMR website , they have a video doing it and use cheaper tryed and tested methods ..
before i stick a grand in a tool i wont use , id be half way to on on3 kit lol

and as with anything a tool is only as good as the human using and setting it up,,
and if human error is a factor ,the tool becomes pointless

altho i do appreciate having that option ,, its just not one i can sanely take,

There is also a Ratech pinion tool for around 50$, but I used the original shim as a starting point and I chose one size thicker in the end.

That would be a good thing. When I did my rear diff I had the axle tubes and all my bolt-on suspension brackets welded. Don't know if that is necessary for you but I was racing my car and did it for peace of mind. Plus, once you get it all cleaned up it presents itself well.

yea funny thing is im a welder , and i was planning on welding up my stuff as well,,
but i think im gonna tig weld it so it looks pretty and seamless

I use a dial indicator with a magnetic base to check pinion depth. Tons of YouTube videos on how to do it. I would definitely use the solid spacer like previously mentioned.

I hope it's going well for you. I did my 3:31 to 4:10 as backwoods as possible. On blocks in driveway with Ranger pick up used gears and ford install kit. Under $200 total. Haven't had slicks on yet but gears are quiet and have numerous launches along with lots of miles. Big expense is lube. It's pricey. I'm old and wouldn't recommend doing it like I did. Ya do what ya have to. It was a learning experience.

Well guys .. after a short delay waiting for the new axle.. I got her back together and have 97 gentile miles on her so far...
Absolutely zero whine,buzz,vibration, clicking ,nothing... Just quiet gears and from what I can tell so far babying it ,she wants to pull.. in churped the tires quite a few times leaving from a stop and by no means gunning it..
Seeing how I replace the upper control arm as well as the upper bushing on the axle housing . As well as the troubles getting the original pinion out,.
It was well worth it to drop the axle out of the car...
We aren't even gonna talk about crushing the crush washer laying on my back. That alone out of the car is fun.. so I couldn't see doing it on jack stands...
Thanks for the recommendation to drop her out.. it also gave me a chance to spray bomb her so she isn't so rusty ...

I just seen at Walmart . Super tech makes axle lube.. its 5.99 a quart as opposed to 14.99 a quart... Project farm on YT did a segment on super tech oil.. which I use now.. I wouldn't see how the gear oil is any less quality
