Tank is full, gauge reads empty with idiot light on. Occasionally when key first turned on gauge reads 1/2 full for a few seconds and then goes to empty with idiot light on.

Any ideas on what I should look into?

Every change out the fuel pump? Level sender and associated circuit is a good place to start. Also search stepper motor on here.

Yeah that usually happens when changing to a GT500 fuel pump setup and the level sender wires are reversed.
But if nothing has changed and it just started happening, you may need to check both sending units, under the back seat, one on each side under the black plastic round covers. Driver side is where the fuel pump is.

Hey Scott, I remember going through this after about a year when this all of a sudden start happening to me . I put in a new sender unit (expensive) ,and no luck. We then tried reversing the wires on the 500 pumps as some others have done , and wella ......everything was fine again

Thanks all for the ideas!

The GT500 pumps have been in for over four years now. When driving the car today I got a couple of km done the road and .... no idiot light with the gauge reading correctly. Will keep my fingers crossed that hopefully it was just a momentary glitch and all is well now.

Yes with drag radials and a spool, but no skinnies! All the way to Marigold Ford in Whitby for the DRCMC All Ford Show. Picked up a "Class Winner" for my trouble. Last year I was lucky enough to get the "Presidents Pick" trophy.
