Sounds like a bad exhaust leak to me. Change the manifold gaskets and button up all the connections from cat back.

Not sure if phasers are that loud, but it's a possibility.

Not sure where your recording from, engine bay or back end. but if you did cams recently I would put a screwdriver to the valve covers and take a closer listen for a follower that may of unseated.

This just started today and got really loud tonight, it's a very loud ticking while driving and that knock at idle is rough. I would kill for it to be something easy like an exhaust leak, these headers where shit quality after all. lol

Passenger side engine bay sorry, it's late and I live in an apartment complex.

If that's a passenger side exhaust leak it's big, really big and should be easy to find. Look for a black firecracker looking pattern coming from the header area. Otherwise be careful if you don't find a leak cause that's sounds awful. If no leak is found, pull that valve cover and start checking your followers and lash adjusters, if ok look to the phaser. Then check the tension of the chain, use a flashlight or harbor frt scope and look down and check your tensioner arms and guides.

So lets assume it's not an exhaust leak, how likely is it a rod or something critical. Could I drive it 25mile to the shop or just play it safe and have it towed?

Do you have a garage? If so, pull the valve cover. It does sound like an exhaust leak but you should be able to find an exhaust leak that big pretty easily. If it is an exhaust leak, you can drive it fine.

However, if you can't find the leak, I wouldn't drive it at all and I would pull the valve cover to check your valve train.

I've heard many exhaust leaks in my time, and that's another one.

I'm having a little trouble locating the leak where I am although the smell of gas from bay is much strong then normal. If I can make the 10 min drive to where I work I can pull the covers but I don't have anything with me to do it in the parking lot.

I would think a tow bill would be cheaper than a motor.

Check your spark plugs...... you may have a loose one.

Oh, good one. I have actually seen that happen once. As everyone mentioned, exhaust leak is the obvious choice but if he can't find the leak that is that loud, something else might be going on. This is one possibility.

What gaskets did you use for the headers? If you used the crappy paper ones that is probably your issue. If you used the ford metal gaskets check for a bolt that loosened.
