Hurst Competition Plus Shifter TR-3650

Hello new to the site, Name is Niko I got a Comp Plus Hurst Short throw about a year to a year and a half ago. Recently took apart because im noticing some looseness in my transmission or shifter, and while I was looking at it the bottom of the shifter has a rubber boot that has blown, Called Hurst in CA, and they told me to replace that part I have to go through a Ford dealership. Does that make sense? Also I only feel "looseness" when hitting certain gaps or bumps in the road. Could this be the reason (shifter) or could my tranny be messed up anywhere? Well, here's my 2 cents Whipple46. IMO I doubt very much if it's your tranny that's messed up at this point. It's most likely your Hurst Shifter. I had both the Hurst Competition Plus and Billet Plus units and they can get sloppy over time or the bolt on the shifter handle can get sloppy if loctite was not used. Get a new boot from Ford or try ebay for a better price, then change to a Barton (I did) or MGW shifter. Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks GT E UP, I do understand the struggle with not using loctite because numerous accounts i would have to take my boot off and retighten. The bolts that lock the shadt in place are shaved off. I would get it if i was rough with my car but shes my baby and this just mind boggles me. I have a friend with a mgw so i think i will switch shifters. Thanks for your help.

I highly doubt that rubber boot has anything to do with the looseness in the shifter. A more probable scenario are the bushings and/or hardware.

I would recommend reinstalling the shifter. Get under the car, while someone in the car moves the shifter. This will allow you to derrmine the issue.

I would be shocked if Ford has that part.

The boot rotted on my Roush shifter. I fill it up with graphite/teflon on a semi-regular basis - one day I'll machine a sleeve and put a spherical bearing in there.

Ya i was sceptical about calling ford for this part because it makes no sense. How is ford going to have that boot i need for my Hurst shifter. I think the guy at hurst was blowing stuff up my sleeve. I ordered the MGW. Heard excellent reviews and someone i know has one. Never heard of barton but i dont question there not good.

Very common issue with those shifters. Ford DOES NOT have the boot because ford never put those shifters in any mustang GT. Shelby put the competition plus but not the billet. I think the rep you spoke to probably thought you meant the large rubber boot that goes around the shifter. Ford would have that. Hurst is manned by a bunch of half witted fuck tards now. 05gtowner I stressed the fact that it was not the boot you could see on the shifter while you drive, rather the boot underneith the car by the tranny, he still said contact ford. As you were saying there dumb half whitted shit heads that are lazy and dont want to do there job.

I know they don't know what they are talking about. It is their part. He just wasn't the right guy to talk to. I have found sending pics and inquiring about part numbers works better.

Essentially what I did. A used gen 1 MGW came up for sale here at a good price and I jumped on it. The hurst isn't a bad shifter but it isn't the best shifter for the remote mounted bullshit our cars have.

Best $260 I have spent, the MGW transformed the shifting on mine. I only went three turns out since the more turns (from0-10)out you go the shorter the throw, but also the notchier the shifting. At three turns its short enough for me, but not notchy at all.
