They weld them because of the crappy half-arse plug welds

Look at a 9" drag Rearend it has
Only a brace across the rear to keep it from bending the center backwards from the tq load of the driveshaft turning the pinion against the diff/axles tq loading the wheels

First off you need to tell me what would cause the axle tube to twist. I can't figure out that part. Does the axle shaft inside all of a sudden swell up and lock on the tubing, creating a twisting force on the tube?
When you launch hard (or only accelerate mildly, for that matter), you put the LCAs in compression and the UCA in tension.

Since the LCAs are located several inches below the centerline of the axle tubes, the LCA forces develop torsional moments in the tubes - think of the LCA brackets plus any relo bracket length added to that as being wrenches that torque the tubes rather than nuts and bolts like you do with "real wrenches".

Those torsional moments in the tubes are what can twist the tubes in the housing. The driver side tube is the more likely victim of twist in its side of the housing.


Eventually, the axle tube torques plus the torque from the UCA force at its distance above axle tube centerline combine in the pumpkin metal to be equal and opposite to the total wheel torque (RWTQ on a dyno).

Guessing the lower the arms are in relocation brackets the more likely the tubes are to twist then?

Oh crap... I've noticed caster issues on my car since I put on Bmr relocation brackets and stallion lca's... I also just replaced factory diff which was destroyed with a true trac. Is there anything that can be done now? I thought maybe something was just out of spec with my brackets or lca's and I was gonna get adjustables to remedy the issue. Haven't noticed anything weird except the caster being off...I just had the rear rebuilt and the guy who built it didn't mention anything about being twisted. How does one go about checking for a twisted axle tube and is it fixable? Am I screwed?


Good questio! I had my 8.8 welded and 9" ends installed on it too but I am not sure if I had twisted axles housings. I assume they check for it but not sure how to check for it.

just curious why C clips would be considered dangerous on a car with rear disc brakes? the caliper and rotor will prevent the axle from coming out right?

Yup, that's a twisted tube.
If only some company that produces beefy metal and already has a good idea for a working axle tube brace could produce one.

Id buy it!! Seriously though, After watching that video of just a bolt on car spinning the tube, Im scared to run mine with some bias plys on it with out welding them.

I think I posted on this before, but I welded the tubes and put on the CHE brace, no issues.

To bad am didnt show damage on axle. Im guessing rod end on lca broke first and allowed the axle to twist. No rod end junk for me

No telling what exactly happened.

I do know, the car had a full WL rear suspension on it. (UCA/Mount....LCA/Relos)

No. If the rod end failed there would be no force trying to twist the driver side axle tube.

If the rod end had in fact failed either as the root-cause-failure or as a consequence of being over-angled once the axle tube twisted, the portion of the video where they're towing it back to the pits would be showing the wheel at the back of the wheelwell instead of at the front like it shows at about 7:20.

If the rod end failed first, and that caused the right side axle tube to twist, then both wheels would be well forward in their wheelwells and the car would have gone straighter. But the axle is clearly not square in the chassis (7:16)
