Another one bites the dust....

2007 GT - Stock Motor
D1 Procharger - 500rwhp
4.10 gears / Manual Trans

Twisted tube on 275/60-15 MT Drag Radial. He had wheel-hop at top of first gear, banged second and the car stopped/twisted around. Customer claims several thousand in damage to car/parts.

SECURE YOUR TUBES! I am leaning towards liking Djstorm100's method....but I will state that I still think welding is a great way to battle this. I have welded tubes in about 30 of my cars, without a single issue.

here is my .02 and some pics of how it should be done. I also have them put in the jig and staighten it.

The bolts are Grade 8 and they are put in direct shear with the tubes. It takes an enormous amount of pressure to strip these in direct shear.

In contrast you can weld the tubes and put this thing in the jig and i can put less than 30 psi of pressure on it and snap the welds. AND yes it doesnt matter how nicely the weld is done it will snap because the cast is just that weak, and weaker when you melt it and reform it in a weld.

Its hard to tell racers this because you get the " well so and so runs 5s with his welded and he has no problems." Its the factory pins holding the car. The weld holds absolutely nothing. I have seen countless welded tubes in the jig and have yet to get one straight without breaking the welds. Welding presents a few other problems as well, if not completely done right and its difficult, you can melt the seals where the tubes slide in and cause leaking by the tubes(seen it), also it pulls the axle and its no longer straight(seen some examples of this and wonder how the car ever went straight down track). IF we weld the tubes we cant weld them and then straighten, because it will break the cast pumpkin. IT has to be welded in the jig and straighten as you go to get it right, its a very time consuming process and its pointless. If the pined tubes wont work you have a 3 second capable 1/4 mile car that needs a 9 inch housing at that point.
thanks for sharing! what size/length are those grade 8 bolts? any concerns with shavings from drilling/tapping the holes?

Use fine thread grade 8 bolts. You take the rear end a part, just mark everything. After words just clean everything and re-assemble.

Its seems that wheel hop is the common denominator in a number of these stories. Anyone heard of twisted tube incidents without hop?

It can be fixed with the right tools just not in your driveway. Most Chassis shop that are able to shorten a rear could do the fix. We can fix them if you have an issue as well but its not like we are real close to most of you guys.

Wheel hop is associated with both a large "impact factor" and more than likely on the millisecond time level an actual momentary increase in the vertical tire loading as well (meaning that the impact factor from the dynamic effect acts in conjunction with a larger force than the static corner weight and the traction that it allows for). Plus, it's cyclic, so you get several hard hits instead of just one and done.

I rather doubt you'll hear any axle twist stories where there wasn't at least a history of wheel hop. Hell, many of these cars have been put into wheel-hop a few times even by drivers who don't drag-race or make runs away from the traffic lights.

Not sure if BMR has rectified the issue, but I had mentioned to them years ago that their LCA relocation brackets were slightly off. The car required steering correction on straight, level road and measurements showed the rear axle was canted. I had another set sent and had the same issue. Taking the brackets off straightened the car out.

Disclaimer: BMR has done me no wrong and I have no malicious intentions with this post. Welding the axle tubes is probably perfectly acceptable, but this is just an FYI.

There is no doubt that we have gone through growing pains over the years. As a matter of fact, this is something that has occured a few times.

The primary issue when these things happen is, we design our parts around our cars.

I have had (very small amount) customers who returned our brackets because they, the Ford Dealership, and a very competent shop.....couldn't get our brackets to fit their car. When this happens, I simply take them out into the shop and install them on our car(s) to verify.....and they fit, perfectly, each and every time. (Laser Cut mounting hole positions are very precise on our bracket)

I will assume you had the (2) hole version. That version was a little tricky sometimes....but regardless of the issue with those, a little tweaking could make everything work. Their mounting style could be tweaked, to work. The new version, not so much. If someone has an issue with the newer version, it's not as simple as forcing the bracket to line up (flexing the back mount strap)

I appreciate feedback. It is always very helpful.

Also keep in mind, there are people with reviews of our products who have the opposite thing to say. Check out what "HellsBells" has to say about our brackets, compared to the competitors. He called me in disbelief, he could not believe how precise out brackets are built compared to the others he has tried. Same thing with "Casper GT"

It seemed like the alignment where the backside mount was welded to the actual bracket was just slightly different on one side from the other, which would cause the one side of the axle to be pulled backward in relation to the other. I had the bolt-in version which really had no "adjustability" other than trying to bend the backside mount. Regardless, this has not turned me off of your products - I was just offering a possible reason some vehicles' alignments/steering may be askew.
