I'm asking this just for general knowledge. Someone asked about it and for the life of me I couldn't remember where I had come across a thread or article on it.

I'm fairly certain that JPC uses LS coils with Big Stuff 3. Is there anyone out there who uses them with the stock computer? Are the advantages just a bigger spark or are there other things like an increased dwell time that make this mod worthwhile?

I'd really like to get some quality answers from folks with some experience or some quality links to good first hand experience in threads or articles.

I'll send a pm out to JPC too. I'd really like to hear their synopsis of the pros and cons related to LS coils on a 3v.

Dwell on LS coils is between 4-4.5ms. What is the dwell on the stock 3v coils and can it be changed with the factory computer? I don't see why they couldn't be wired into the factory harness, but it would depend on the ability of the factory computer to allow the dwell time to be altered.

Also, the factory coils have a switched 12+ and a ground which is triggered by the computer. LS coils have a switched 12v+, ground trigger from computer, signal return, and engine ground.

I have ls coils. But with motec. I don't think you can use them with stock ecu. You would need an igniter. I could be wrong though.

I have never tried running them on stock ECU.

They work great on stand alone systems. Have no issues firing C16 at 1300 HP.

Like stated above it would require some custom wiring to make it all work the LS coils are 3 wire and Mod motors are 2.

The LS coils have built in "igniters". The really hot coils actually have a heatsink on them. Perhaps that's why they have 3 wires instead of two. I can't say for certain but IMO the extra wire is to trigger the igniter on the coil. Meanwhile 2 terminal 3 valve coils are probably triggered directly by the ECU. I'm not electrically savvy enough to know how to do the conversion but it would make for a interesting project.

If it can't be done directly with the factory computer I wonder if I could use Megaquirt for a piggy back just for the coils and let the main ECU handle everything else?

ill try to find the post i read about it the turbo forums.....it was alot of reading and my ADD kicked in....

from what it says, he installed the LS coils, but the dwell on the ford ECU was not long enough to charge the LS coils, so he added a boost-a-spark and also dedicated relay for power.....sounds easy enough.....

and if you read the seond post, seems plenty of guys over there had good success with a boost-a-spark on just a stock set up....

Has anyone adapted this CNP to the 3v yet? I've seen it used but couldn't get any wiring specs.
