When the rear end is jacked up should both wheels have play, or just one side?

Ok, 2005 GT 34k miles. Pretty much a garage queen

I started driving the 05 on a daily basis 2-3 weeks ago. I sold my old DD in anticipation of the arrival of my 16 GT I ordered.

Over the last couple of days I have developed a sound in the rear drivers side that sounds like some sort of drag or grind.

It does not happen when hitting even the hardest of bumps in this shitty Va roads

The noise is extremely intermittent and hard to reproduce with consistency. The only noise I can equate to it is when I had the tip of a body screw that rode on top of my header.

At any rate, this noise comes on when I make a 90 degree left turn, or equivalent and last to varying degrees, usually less than a minute, then the car will be as quiet as church mouse.

Yesterday I jacked the car and checked everything along the exhaust and drivetrain, feeling for a dragging bolt, loose part, etc. I did find a loose heat shield by the drivers side cat and tightened that up. That was not the culprit as I heard the noise again this am.
Today I jacked the car up again to double check my work, look for signs of grinding, checked tightness of the adjustable pan hard bar, ensured the rear was square and in position, all of which yielded negative results. The only thing I noticed was that there is a little play in the passenger wheel with the car in the air and the driver's side doesnt budge. I bounced this off my fox and both wheels has equal amounts of play.

I'm at a loss and have no idea what is causing this issue. Any help would be appreciated! Any other tests or checks I could do, etc... Could it be something in the rear end? If so I would figure it should be more consistent or at least easy to reproduce.

Thanks a ton guys

Sounds like a passenger side axle bearing. If you turn left noise comes or increases? Turn right noise is not present or decreases?

Could be worn out clutch packs in the rear differential. Does it shudder at all when turning?

Jesse, I would just drive the car and not worry about it. Trying to diagnose a noise that will drive you crazy could be a simple harmonic issue . Drive it till it fails or continues to get worse. Are you going to the next Cars and Coffee? Imma try and make it there. I asked Craig if he was going.

Hey guys,

So... I get my dunce cap... the wheels rotation (fore to aft) was due to having the ebrake on.

the noise is still there, on occasion. There is no vibration or humming. I found a thread last night where a guy with a 05 had the exact same issue and it turned out to be worn out brake pad on the interior brake pad.

Ray, probably won't make it, I'll be in TN. I need to link up with ya so you can check out my Fox Body. I can't ignore the noise, it's too loud and irritates the shit out of me ;-)

My trak lok makes grinding/groaning/scraping noises while turning after the diff warms up - Ford rebuilt it as the clutches were all shot and bound up with material, less than 20,000 miles later it's back to where it was. I added friction modifier a while back, did not help with the noise, just made the locking function worse.

I buddy of mine with a 2006 had moaning noises from the rear, only when we turned into a driveway or made sharp slow speed 90 degree turns.

Turned out to be a shot limited slip...

Thanks everyone! I wonder if Ford will fix it under a TSB even though we MAY be a TAD outside of the warranty... my mileage is good to go...

So today I put the car in the air again, checked everything from front to back, took the rear brakes apart, everything looked like a 34k mile car should.

I sprayed white lith grease on my panhard bar and shock mounts as a hail marry effort to resolve this issue. On the upside, the car didn't really make the noise the entire 30 mile trip to work Friday and faintly on the way home... I'm hoping it's like a regular ford, let it marinate over the weekend and the problem fixes itself.
