Here's my first post! (2006 GT Premium)

I'm looking to do exhaust cut out's on my car the old school way. I want to have the old cable system, where you pull a cable and the exhaust diverts from going through the cats and mufflers, to pouring out the sides right by the front tires. I heard the cast iron systems sold online leak. Electric cut-outs are only a matter of time before failing because electric motors mixed with heat doesn't work. anyone have any ideas how to design such a thing? also being a duel exhaust makes it more of a challenge. I don't mind designing my own system, just looking for inputs the best way to go about it. I'd like to have the cables come up into the cab somewhere discreet

Thanks guys, and feel free to direct me if there's another thread about this.

Never heard of this scheme with the cable. If you wanted simple..and reliable, a flange plate on each side... + cordless impact driver might be the ticket. I saw that setup on an old style gasser, a couple of years ago. With the small, square flange plates removed, it all comes out each side, just aft of the front wheels...and it's fn loud ! Even if the cable concept can be implemented, you might want to still have the flange plates available..in the trunk, in case something went amiss.....and it's stuck open on one side. On the street, around town, you will eventually get busted, since they will hear it from 1 mile away. If it's for the strip, the simple flange plate removal would be good enough for the day. Either way, the front O2 sensors still need to be inline. The ECU can't run the eng without the front O2 sensors being present. And with the rear O2 sensors now out of line, the rear O2 sensors will have to be shut off in the tune.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a tune disabling rear 02 sensors, and I'm thinking about leaving it as such. Correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't the front 02 sensors connected right at the headers? Also being a lowered car, the car has about 4" of clearance on the side skirts. less in the front under the chin spoiler. getting under the car to add/remove plates is a task that isn't easily repeated. I ran straight pipes all the way back, no cats or mufflers, for a couple months around town no issue. I'm looking for a system that doesn't require me to get under the car constantly, but also doesn't fail after two weeks. The Kit on AmericanMuscle looks the exact same as the ebay kits, so I'm not really sure what my options are here.

I'm not convinced you have an option, besides buying a set of roush electronically controlled mufflers designed for the S550 and cutting and pasting them or the guts inside into what you have on your car. I'd look into something like this before I tried the cast iron cable cutouts. None of that stuff works, that I've seen.

Here's the old school device you are referring to young buckaroo. I remember hearing the old timers (old relative to even me) talking about these. A friend of mine was going to do them on his 66 F100 that was built to the gills but never got around to it. So you can rest assured you aren't dreaming and they do exist. Jegs or Summit may handle them or will at least know what old school speed shop to call that will be able to help you. But personally I'd suggest motorized of some nature because they will likely seal much better and not be as limited on where you have to put them. Plus mentioned above they aren't cast.

We used to use those but they all end up leaking after awhile. Like mentioned before, we all switched to a flange set up and would bolt a plate and gasket on there.

Kinda figured that. I thought at one time I wanted electric cutouts, but it was a passing fancy. But the great thing about this hobby is everyone's individual taste when it comes to things like this. I remember a friend of mine (R.I.P. PHIL :angels2:2008), had a set up that sprayed bleach on the ground in front of his rear tires to do big smoky burnouts. Another friend had a setup called 'tranny injection' in which he pumped a little ATF into the carb as he was driving down the road. Obviously it created this nasty thick smoke screen from his tailpipes that you could not see through. Oh the days of yore and 'innocence'.

Look at Doug's cutouts. Heard good things about them, motor is a little more robust and a little more out of the way. Plus if it fails, you can just unbolt it and drop on a cap until you get it fixed.

Yikes is an understatement. I think I could find a better use for $1700.00
