On cold start I get knock or detonation or some such

So, 2012 GT, I noticed it idled a litlte rough from the factory on cold starts till it did it's initial warm up, no big deal I figured, just a cold start thing. I installed a steeda CAI and a 91 octane tune from SCT and now from a cold start tt runs a bit rough and then I hear 2 pops (from the engine, not exhaust) then it runs fine. I might make a video of it for you guys if you like, the rough start might last maybe 5-10 secs. if the engine is at all warm it starts and idles fine. I'm not getting any CELs and the vehicle diagnostics came back saying everything is fine. oh, if i give it some gas during startup i dont get the pops, so running lean would be my guess. i checked for gaps in my steeda intake but didn't see any, on my 2007 I had a similiar issue when I was getting unregulated air in.

I've been thinking i'll do some data logging and sending the info to a local tuner who is SCT certified and tunes mustangs. or maybe I should just try a whole different tune. I was thinking of going with BAMA, I dont want to spend too much on a tune, there is one on these forums that wants like $400 isn't there? How can I be sure the tune is going to be much different from the one SCT gives to all of these tuners anyway?

I've also been considering returning it completely to stock and driving it for awhile, then if I still get rough cold starts taking it into the dealership.

What would you do? also does anyone know how much different tuners charge for tunes? I saw brookespeed charges $100 but from the description i'd be concerned it's the same exact tune SCT sends out

Is the tune setup for the Steeda cold air setup? Or is it just a generic 2011 sct tuner?

You need to order a tune from BBR, Bama or one of the many other vendors on this site and tell them you mods and they will send you a tune for your exact mods. The canned tunes from SCT are pretty generic and there have been several people who have had trouble with them. Get a good tune from a vendor on here and you will be good to go. I have had zero issues with my BBR tune so I can recommend them without any reservation.

If its just a canned tune, its not designed to work with the Steeda cold air intake, thats more than likely your problem.

The tune file says its for a steedacai, But I am leaning towards getting one from a vendor on the forum. Sorry, wont be using Torq or Evolution, I dont like Torq's attitude on the forums and Evolution has a lot of controversy about mods and runs and dyno graphs and all sorts of things. I might consider a Lethal Performance tune though, I haven't seen any unprofessional posts from them, and it's from Jon Lund which is supposed to be good. BBR might be alright as well.. hopefuly i'll decide before close of business.

Lethal and Evolution are both Jon Lund tunes.

Jon Lund is a truly amazing tuner, so you can't go wrong there. You can try going direct to him and save yourself the run around and delay with Lethal/Evo.

This is generally a "lean backfire". Popping through the intake at part throttle is a lean backfire and is definitely not normal. You'll want to get that worked out.

How much does livernois charge for their tunes? isn't their intake+tune package like $990 or something crazy like that?

Honestly, any of the tuners you mentioned in this thread are going to be able to get you to the same place. You'll find that there are plenty of positive threads out there for each of these companies, and all of them have worked hard to develop their tunes. I can't speak for our competitors, but I do know that any of these companies will give you tunes that will be safe, powerful and definitely a night/day difference from the "canned" or preloaded tune inside the programmer.

Bama develops all of our tunes, like most of these companies do, in-house on a chassis dyno. Ours is a Dynojet 224xLC which allows us to use an eddy-current brake on our inertia dyno to apply load. Not only do we conduct sweep, steady state, step tests to make sure that our calibrations are accurate, we street test each car while datalogging and run the same datalogs to ensure consistency from the dyno to the street. Countless hours are spent on the street for driveability and automatic shift patterns for our variety of tunes (Street, Performance and Race) as well as throttle mapping for instantaneous down to mild/linear throttle response (depending on what you're looking for).

I haven't called Bama because i'm at work when they are open, I prefer e-mails and forums so my co-workers wont know that i'm not working, all they hear is my furiously typing away
