Looking to start modding my 2006 v6 mustang with 194,000 miles. So far I've only done a muffler delete since im from California. Essentially I am looking at buying a cold air intake and getting a tune but was wondering if tuning my car with high milage will end up declining my motor or transmission faster than stock would . Any thoughts ?

Anytime you increase power you have more wear and tear, but that doesn’t your motor is going to blowup.

yea unfortunately the 4.0 isnt the best platform to add hp ,
i myself came from the 4.0 before my v8 swap,
and dino is right ,, skip the CAI and get a tune and some gears as well . (3.73 \ 4.10 )

and unless you go boost , thats gonna be about all she wrote

A cold air intake will do nothing for your car. Just get a 91 octane tune.
On a NA higher octane doesn't do anything, ignition timing depends on the geometry of the combustion chamber itself and the compression ratio. If the tuner increases the timing this should be possible on any fuel. Or am I wrong?

You can run increased timing to a certain extent on any fuel, but even lower compression will knock if you advance timing too far for the specific octane you are running.

A tune is really only worth it if you are willing to run 91/93 octane IMO unless you really only want to improve trans shift points and throttle response.

Adding a tune like stated MIGHT help. The variables would be the overall internal condition of the engine. Compression, wear items, etc.

How the heck do you get away with a muffler delete in any state ? That's gonna be stupid loud.
That 4.0 L V6 is not the best platform to be starting from, esp with 194K miles. As is, it's 20 years old. Myself, I would be inclined to sell the car as is, and move onto something newer, like 2011+ ....with the 5.0L V8. Even the 2011 V6 with it's 3.7L eng is a better bet.

What woke up my '07 V6 the most was swapping in a GT 3.73 rear end along with a set of bullitt wheels with samller diameter tires and then getting a tune to adjust for them. Parts were gleaned from junkards for not much $$$.

Other low-cost gleanings that had minimal effect: BBK CAI, BBK shorty headers, Pypes cat back dual exhaust, Pony package rear sway bar, etc. The silliest performance items gleaned for free was a throttle body spacer and Screamin' Demon coil pack, lol. Most of those things aren't worth paying retail $$$ for, but at junkyard prices IMO why not? #ymmv

I now have a Lito tuned '06 GT instead, so the V6 is being returned to stock and being sold for much more than the $1200 I paid for it

Previous owner started doing some mods on 09 before we got it. Check engine light, obnoxious noise and no real performance gains. Removed the CAI and sold it and put a muffler back on it, of course he threw the good factory muffler away. Check engine light fixed itself with the CAI removed, still have the throttle body spacer but it will be gone as soon as I get factory bolts.

Almost nothing and many at no cost, as stated gleaned in junkyards.
Also stated most of those things aren't worth paying retail $$$ for.

well thats a relief ,.
i almost dumped a ton of money in the 4.0 ,
but that was because i was ill informed and didnt know the marketing hype and false advertisements company's do to get your cash .

it wasnt a knock on you by any means ,
just taking me down memory lane and what i almost did
