Damn that was fast from the engine arrival to installation! :thumb2:

The guys at Matt D's shop are good. Matt's dad Joe and Robert jumped right in.

Too nervous to be there? You should be the one that turns it over for the first time:thumb2:

I know, I know, but I felt it better to leave monitoring everything to the guys who do it for a living.

Yesterday the car was started twice but only for about 15 seconds each time because of the valve train noise. When I got there today we started it again and while it made noise for a few seconds it quickly went away. Even though I submerged and pumped up the lash adjusters with break-in oil and pressurized the system again with break-in oil on May 14th, I guess they bleed down. In any event we had it running long enough to check the fluids and heat it up with no unwanted noise. Shut off and started again with no noise. All I could hear is the sweet whine of the SC and the rumble of the cams! If all goes well Matt D will complete a break-in tune this afternoon and I will be on my way home tomorrow to clean the car for a show Sunday.

BTW BruceH when I asked the question in the 4.6 Tech forum nailed it. Thanks Bruce!

Whew! I knew your build was way too thorough for anything to go wrong. Great news indeed!

Car show was great, over 150 cars. Rained on us twice, but all was good. My car is still at the shop with a few hiccups:

- code related to the Crankshaft Position Sensor (sensor to be replaced).
- no reverse gear and backup lights always on (suspect this is a adjustment to the auto cable or a cable connector issue)

No Joy with the New Engine!

Sorry, no updates for some time as a result of a few weeks vacation and a few days crying in my beer!

Background, initially there was a slight valve train noise in the RH (passenger) side. It went away briefly then came back. Everything looked good under the valve covers, so off came the SC and timing cover. When the cam phaser was disassembled the little spring in the FRPP phaser limiter kit was broken. Since this is my first 3V build before assembling the engine I emailed pictures of the Phaser Limiter Kits installed in the Phasers to FRPP and they acknowledged they were installed correctly. These pictures illustrates the “before” spring; I will post a picture of the “after” broken spring later.

New cam phaser and bolts were installed this time using Livernois Motorsports Cam Phaser Lockouts. Engine still did not run smoothly so it was time to do a leak down test. No issues on the LH (drivers) side but there was a 15% leakage/loss on the RH (passenger) side exhaust valves.

Engine has to come out. Hard do believe that a little broken spring in the FRPP cam phaser limiter kit would be the cause of such carnage. The engine will be back on the stand next week and I will pull the head to examine the damage and formulate a plan of attack. Please stay tuned for pictures and updates.

Damn! Sorry to hear that! But you will get it fixed up soon!

That's one reason I went with lockouts and removed my solenoids and VCT wiring...at 600hp you won't miss the VCT!

Sorry to hear the motor has to come back out. Do you think the broken spring allowed contact between the pistons/valves?

That's scary that a person could be so careful and meticulous building their motor absolutely perfect and it still breaks. This is disheartening.

Will need to rename the thread .... "Aluminator" Build with associated mods over the winter, SPRING AND SUMMER". Yes, we will get there it will just take a little longer and cost a few buck more! lol

I wanted lockouts, but the limiters were "free", well included with the cylinder heads. In hindsight I should have spent the extra $50.

Looks that way, everything else has looked perfect so far, will know more once the head is off.

Very disheartening, but stuff happens. The first time I heard it running I got weak in the knees! This had to be before that little spring broke and the exhaust valves kissed the pistons.
