well my shortblock is almost done and now im considering having the heads ported while it is apart, how much is this going to effect the tune on startup

its on the stock tune but since i have no cats im thinking of running the 87 octane tune with the rear o2 sensors turned off and 93 octane in the tank for the first startup I think that maybe safe, but if i port the heads is it going to change the airflow enough to hurt, i mean its not the same as changing an intake i dont think

basically idk what to do about my startup tune
and I really want to port the heads while it is apart

i want to keep the cams stock because i want to boost it

the bottom end is still 11:1
just je forged pistons and eagle forged h beam rods
clevite coated bearings
arp studs
keeping oil squirters

I don't tune, but I would think that it would be fine as long as you aren't changing anything else. What will affect tune will be if you changed cams, throttle body, etc. Check with your tuner and see first though.

It's all going to depend on how radical you go with the porting. Any change in air flow will alter the tuning...whether it be a little or a lot.

These heads flow so well..Is there much to be gained with mild porting??

depends on your definition of mild porting?.. Obviously port work, done right, even mild port work will benefit. Even just cleaning up the chambers will help. But a clean port job to help build air velocity through the heads will help a great deal.

87 in these cars is not the best. They like to ping. And with a good motor, only run 93.

I have never ran anything except 93

I just want to use the 87 SCT tune so that im positive it does not add to much timing lol

And one of mt friends made a good point ... I want to go boosted and the stock heads should be okay

But until its boosted I only have the jlt intake or the stock and custom exhaust

I don't have a specific tuner that's why I want to just run the SCT canned tune

The last tune I bought broke a ringland lol

If you mean "porting", as meaning cleaning up the casting marks and smoothing the bowls, then yes, go for it. It cannot hurt.
As for actually enlarging the port, not so much.

Says who? They flow in the 260-270 range stock. I know of a ported Livernois set that is on a flow bench right now that flows in the 280-290 range. That my friends is weaker than old 4V heads. so yes they can greatly benefit from porting.

I think your flow numbers are significantly off. They flow up around 300 cfm in stock form.

I cant believe people still think a flow bench is the tell all end all test for headwork.
Flow =! Power

Im sure these guys doing the headwork know this, but since the community is still so caught up on CFM they feel obligated to feed you the borderline irrelevant flowbench data.

A boosted setup on stock cams, I wouldnt enlarge the ports at all. But smoothing the bowls and smoothing any casting lines is something you could easily do yourself if youre somewhat mechanically inclined.

I have ported several sets if heads myself, never had them on a flowbench though

I think I will just clean up the castings
I am on the block that thing was horrible
One of my water ports had a thin sheet of aluminum covering 1/3 of it
