Speedometer Stuck???

This morning on my way to work I noticed after pulling out of the driveway the speedometer was not registering anything. As I went down the road, I looked down and it had jumped to 60mph and stayed there as I stopped. Now it seems that instead of returning to zero, its starts at 60 and begins to read speed from there. My mileage isn't registering any faster than it should though.

Has anyone had this problem? I didn't find anything in the search... I am not throwing any odd codes either (I checked). Could the speedo sensor be the issue? I'll have to look up how to replace that if it is the case...

Thanks all!

Chris

My speedo stopped working about 8 months ago. I think it's a cluster problem in mine cause when it does work I can see it kind of getting caught and being notchy when it does move. It only works maybe once every other week and I've been too lazy and cheap to replace it.

Eventually I'm going to get a gt500 gauge cluster.

Since your mileage is still ticking away normally its not your speed sensor. Your cluster is bad. If its still under warranty then just take it into the dealership. If not then they are about $330 plus labor. This is not something you can do yourself do to the fact that your cluster has to be programmed to the PCM. No way around it.

Ugh...
I haven't had time to look for more info, but would possibly pulling a fuse to the cluster allow it to reset in some way? Or, once it's gone, it's gone?

I have the exact same problem right now...I have a hard time believing my cluster has gone bad though. My car's only got 27K miles on it.

OP: Has your cluster been out of your car at all?

The clusters in these cars are known for issues. Erratic speedo, along with some other guage problems that are pretty common.

My educated guess go towards a faulty instrument cluster.

No, the cluster has never been out of the car (that I know of).

It has been unusually cold here lately...

TONS of threads on this situation.. it's the motors on the cluster that go bad. Their like 6-7 bucks a piece and if you can do it yourself if you feel up to it. Or people on ebay do it for like a 100 bucks.. search for " Stepper motor's for cluster " theirs like 10 write up's

If it's the stepper motor? No the motor has to be replaced - which is costly from Ford or you can do it yourself or look on ebay and their's people who do it for like 80-90 bucks and it takes a week to send out and return..

I've been wanting to repair one of these just to see if I can do it. I've done lots of LED interior conversions and I"m pretty handy with a soldering iron.

I've had several clusters open and the stepper motors look pretty simple to replace.

OP - Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a little while, then re-connecting it? Also, have to tried to re-load your tunes?

If not, you can most likely pick up a used in good condition gauge cluster for fairly cheap. The expensive part is taking it to a dealer and having it programmed with your correct miles. If you don't want to go throught that, you should be able to get away with leaving a note on the inner portion of your driver's side door sil stating what the actual miles are, and note that you had to replace a faulty tachometer. You can do that here in IL.
