I guess my starter was replaced before because I definitely just replaced my solenoid over the summer and not the whole starter

I see I am a day late and a dollar short, but did you try getting under there with a hammer or a large rock and wack the starter a few times?

I know this sounds stupid, but it works, I have done it for years.

it will get you going, but ultimatly you will need a new starter. This is just to get you out of a jam.

and I get that top bolt with socket - 3in ext - universal - 6in ext - 1/4 inch rachet. reach over the back of the bellhousing with one hand to guide the socket on.

also on mod motors don't be surprised if you go to find you really do only have 2 bolts holding the starter on. it is common for mechanics to just say fuck it on the top bolt.

Yes it's still there and the teeth look fine. (I don't know if there is something wrong with it, it's out of my league.)
I just tried to jump the solenoid with a screw driver, same result spinning.

I hear the solenoid pushing the pinion out yes, it's a quick metal click.

Are you sure the flywheel is attached to the motor? The bolts can and do back out. I'm not sure how much it would take to affect the starter.

I can't say I am 100% sure on that, going to have it towed to the dealer in the morning.
:/

I heard some clunky shit the other day while starting but it started up fine, don't know what that was. (metallic sounding?)
Last time I drove the car, started and ran fine parked it and this morning nada.

Too see if the ring separated from the flywheel you can pull the starter put the car in gear and see if you can move the ring inside the bell housing hole with a screw driver.

You may be able to use the hole on the bottom as well to do the same thing. May have to make the window a little bigger.

How does the gear look on your old starter?

The gear looks fine on the old starter, no chips or anything.

It's a 5 minute job.

I'm thinking that your flywheel bolts loosened up over time and that the starter kicking out is pushing the flywheel out of contact with the teeth.

Well you ruled out the starter, if you can't check the flywheel for forward to aft movement or to see if the ring is spinning, you can check to see if the flywheel is turning properly by putting the rear wheels in the air and put it in gear, short the clutch position switch and crank the car with the clutch up. Rear wheels should steadily spin while cranking. If they don't move its not engaging properly and there could be a flywheel issues.

I would also make sure you can turn the engine over by hand with a wrench on the crank bolt to make sure the rotating assembly is good.

Just did this, clutch out in first gear, rear wheels don't spin!
So does that confirm the flywheel is no longer one with the engine?
When I did get that tiny bump like something caught (1 in maybe 10 tries), the wheels flinched.

That's my guess sounds like the starter gear isn't engaging the flywheel properly so could be the flywheel bolts backed out and its not engaging properly fwd to aft or the outer ring could be spinning on the flywheel.

Did you make sure the engine still turns by hand and nothing is seized keeping it from starting.

The engine turns by hand yes, I do get crazy scratching metal sounds randomly if I keep trying to start it on off on off on off.

I would pull the starter again and look for play and damage on the flywheel. With the back wheels off the ground you can spin it to turn the flywheel and look for damage or play or if the ring gear separated from the flywheel. Unfortunately sounds like the trans needs to come out. Stock flywheel?
