Next project will be what I always wanted, a 9 sec notchback.
The stuff that hasn't been done before usually costs a ton of money to do. Meanwhile someone can go fast with a fox body because the cars are light and parts don't cost and arm and a leg like all the new stuff. Besides, 9 seconds is 9 seconds.

Frankie, would it possible for you to post a picture of your broken flywheel? And by the way, sorry about your bad luck on this. That sounds like an expensive repair at the dealer.

very sad to see that i was going to post something but don't want to shit on his thread it was more along the lines of "WTF ARE YOU DOING STAHHPP!!"
Nope flywheel is with the dealer.
All I can say is that the ring gear was smoothly separated where the factory supposedly welds it, it was all silver and shiny from spinning around the flywheel, no weird cracks or anything just separated.

My SFI rated flex plate has the ring welded on. I wonder if a SFI rated flywheel would also have the ring gear welded on?
In any case, with the amount of racing you do, I would look into a SFI rated flywheel for replacement.

I have a Mcleod steel flywheel. I just checked the starter ring gear. It is not welded on. It appears to be either pressed on and/or has some sort of interference fit. I haven't had it long enough to comment on its longevity.
I have no idea why the Exedy has so many holes.

The only thing carrying the shock is the flywheel mating surface to the clutch, which is just the center part of the flywheel.
So how would the ring gear even have a chance of coming off of the flywheel?
isn't the ring gear just sitting there spinning with no interaction from anything after the car is started?

I'm guessing the flywheel bends a little at launch, and after enough cycles the welds or press fit for the ring gear gives way.

A guess would be the shock from hooking up with a high rpm clutch dump. I'm also thinking that having it welded on might not be a good idea. A whole lot of force was dissipated when it separated, I wonder where that force would of went if it was welded, maybe the oil pump?
AFAIK I haven't had a welded flywheel yet and I've had a few different sfi rated models.
