Stick or Auto...that is the question!

ok guys, Ive been doing my research about a new 14 gt. I see that the mt-82 has a few downfalls, and is fairly weak compaired to its automatic brother. I have plans for FI eventually with all the supporting mods. Goals are mid to high 10's in the 1320 on pump gas (93 oct), HP of 550 +. Street car with some strip time.
I keep seeing posts of cracked cases, broken gears, sticking pedals etc. sure there are fixes for them, but in the end is it worth it. I know some of you are going to say just swap in the tremac xl but I dont what to deal with all that. Im looking for honest feedback.

This isn't the same forum as where you came from. Asking what to buy is NOT tech here, it's chit chat. This entire forum was built on the premise that nobody fucks up our tech forums with chit chat. Some here get rather testy about it.

As to your question, go test drive both. An auto is much more conducive to the drag strip and will hold the power better than the MT82. However, I test drove both and bought the manual. While test driving the auto, I forgot I was on a test drive. I felt like I was driving a minivan. Driving the MT82 in comparison was an absolute blast and I was disappointed when the salesman made me turn back toward the dealership.

I understand and accept the limitations of the MT82. I ordered an MGW shifter before I actually bought the car. I also am operating it under the very clear mindset that at the first sign of trouble I'll simply replace it with the Tremec T56 Magnum. I had a T56 Magnum in my Bullitt and it was amazing.

I know it has been asked a billion times. most of the theads ive seen turn into a pissing match about something or another. Just looking for honest feed back. thanks Skwerl for the advice. Im used to driving stick and my wife and I miss it. I dont want to go through what I did with my subaru and blow up the trans then replace it with something that I have to modify to work...ie different gearing etc. what about a gt 500 trans is that a bolt in affair?

The thing you have to keep in mind is how much a tune will change an automatic, I have the 2014 auto myself and after getting a tune from Mike Rousch it will squall the tires going into 3rd gear at 75mph. The autos are great for the strip and need very little (except maybe a torque converter if you want max performance) when upgrading power, they are also very consistent. Me personally, I'm very happy with my auto. I have only a tune and O/R pipe and i've beat countless other mustangs with a lot more bolt ons and multiple corvettes. I'm sure there are a few more auto guys on here that will chime in. Auto is great for strip, manual may be a little more fun to street drive.

+1. You said exactly what I was going to say. I'll add that my '11 GT was a Brembo car with the MT-82 and I had enough problems with the MT-82 that I went with the 6R80 for my '14 GT. I've owned far more manuals than autos, but absolutely love the 6R80 with Mike Rousch's tune in it!!! I easily beat all the other naturally aspirated Coyotes (mostly manuals) that show up at our local dragstrips - and there are a lot of them.

If drag racing and/or aggressive street driving are high on your priority list, get the auto. If it's just a street car that won't ever see redline and you like rowing through the gears, get the MT-82.

I currently sit at the mod level and power level you're looking into, with the MT82. Autos are def. cool if you're a track rat. Personally I love to street drive my GT and didn't think twice about the auto. Plus I feel it's a more rewarding experience at the strip when you're banging gears. to each his own. Build the car to handle the power and it will leave you with a shit eating grin every time.

For your goals I'd say auto. Sometimes I second guess my choice of going manual, but every sports car I've ever owned had been a stick... Skwerl hit it right on the head IMO. I knew the MT82 is junk, but went with it anyways simply because the car is so much fun to blast around in. FWIW I haven't had a single issue with my car yet, however it's a lightly bolt on car with 6800 miles so it's early to tell.

Auto is a blast to drive too. I will never do another high HP manual car. They are pains in the butt. I rather go fast, win races, and not worry about clutch/tranny issues.
