I'm guessing some of your race guys are running trans/diff coolers. I need some advice.

Because I added the belly pan to the car and PLENTY of room to mount a cooler I figured it would be a good idea to add a trans cooler.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of options as far as pumps go. In fact if I am looking for constant operation (I am) it looks like the Tilton #40-527 is the only option. One thing that has me a bit worried is the "head" is plastic and it recommends running plastic NPT-AN fittings. Really, plastic? Any advice here? Any other pump suggestions?

The pump has 3/8NPT fittings but I have a ton of -10 Kevlar braided hose and lots of -10 hose ends on hand. My cooler, which was supposed to be an oil cooler and didn't fit right also has -10 fittings. It looks from Tilton's literature that running big lines/fittings/cooler is actually a good thing. Thoughts on this?

Tilton mentions running a check valve, anyone doing this?

Tilton says it is not a bad idea to run a filter, anyone doing this?

Tilton says it is best to mount the pump after the cooler (therefore sucking through the cooler) because the pump runs cooler and lasts longer. I get the concept, but sucking through the cooler seems like it would have its downsides.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

I need to stop up there Thursday to pick some stuff up anyway, thanks for the heads up.

What brand/part number is that? I would like to pull the spec sheet.

What size lines do you run?

Does that little baby cooler get the job done (trans)?

Thanks:thumb:

These kits are designed and developed by Rehagen Racing.
Our part # is RR-TCLR-05

The kit uses a -8 line, and there are no additional filters in the system. This is the same system we have been running for years, and it has been very reliable.

The cooler is made by Setrab and has a small cooling fan on it. We offer another cooler w/ dual fans for this kit, but it's really overkill.

Every car we service we recommend our cooler kits. It becomes even more important when you start to run long sessions and races (Grand-Am, World Challenge, Trans-am, NASA Enduro). We also recommend our diff cooler kits for the same reasons as above.

I checked that out on the site this morning. I only need the pump though. I have a cooler, lines, etc. Were pretty handy round here.:thumb:

The car will rarely see any open track time anymore. I just want to put a trans cooler on because of the belly pan we just added. The trans isn't cooling like it used to now.

I'll send you a PM.

I've used the Tilton pumps before and never had any issues with the head or pulling through the filter. They seem pretty bulletproof.

Thanks for the input, I don't doubt they are good. They are by far the most popular pump out there. I like to weigh all my options though. And if Rehagen is having success with that other pump and me running one “supports my local shop” and its not twice the money I’ll go that way.

I don’t dislike places like Summit, but if I can buy stuff from my local vendors instead I will.:thumb:

Yep, we had 3rd gear fail on the Getrag MT-82 earlier this year... from heat. The folks doing the repairs said the entire 3rd gear was BLUE from heat. Wasn't missed shifts or extra power abuse, it was HEAT. We've seen too many Getrags fail on track to ignore this.

If you are doing a lot of track events, or W2W racing, call Rehagan. Get their trans cooler kit. Save your transmission! Their diff cooler isn't a bad idea, either.

The other option is to use a real trans, like the Tremec Magnum XL. :thumb: Then still add the trans cooler...
