Got a text from my tech friend at a local Ford dealer just a bit ago...

It read" "Blown up Coyote motor...more likely than you think"

I responded with cylinder # 8?

He called like two seconds after and asked how I knew. This is the first one they have seen at that dealer.

The car had an aftermarket tune in it and was returned to stock.

Not sure who tuned the car, but it had a major site sponsor's ''that is regularly covered in magazines'' stickers on the car.

I will try to get more information, it's suspected the altered knock sensor calibration led to the engine malfunction. I asked him how he could verify that...not sure how you could unless you saw the actual tune file.

Warranty has been voided.

Yes, that's why it is a higher octane. But 93 octane pump gas is 93 octane, period. If it has 10% ethanol, it is STILL 93 octane.

Sent from my DROID2 Global using tapa-whatzit-thing

The fact that it burn cooler has nothing to do with the octane rating. Higher octane fuel burns slower, but not necessarily cooler. Ethonal burns cooler and slower. That's something that higher octane gasoline doesn't do.

93 octane e10 will burn cooler than 93 octane pure gasoline. Cooler combustion temps will help with detonation control.

Ethanol burns cooler.

... and it takes more ethanol to equate the energy output of gasoline. Hence the fuel economy drop off associated with E10 gas. From a pure octane perspective, there is no realistic difference. With a blend devised to mimick petro-gas octane ratings, the cooling properties of ethanol are severely comprimised. I don't feel that an inadequate tune can be saved with E10 fuel. Several of these #8 cylinder fail-boat tunes were using E10.

Ford TSB: Don't Modify Your 2011-2012 Mustang 5.0!

By Sam HaymartPublished: July 9, 2011Tags: 2011, 2012, 5.0, ford, mods, Mustang, TSB

timthumb.php

Ford has tidal waves throughout the Mustang modding
realm this week, issuing a new Technical Service
Bulletin (TSB) to dealers that essentially says, “If an
owner has modified their 2011-2012 Mustang 5.0
drivetrain, their warranty is void”.

TSB 11-7-7 warns Ford Service Departments that when
servicing 2011-2012 Mustangs with the new 5.0 liter
engine, to look for modifications the owner may have
made before covering a list of engine and drivetrain
failures.

The new 5.0 liter 32V DOHC Coyote engine has been
widely received as one of the best new engines Ford
has ever produced. But what a lot of shade tree
mechanics don’t know or overlook is that this high
compression engine is near maxed out structurally at is
factory specified power output.

The TSB warms that common modifications done by a
lot of owners that increase the power output can cause
premature failure of not only a number of engine
components, but drivetrain systems like clutch and
gears.

Ford has been in the business of encouraging its owners
to customize their cars in the past decade, in fact even
offering a raft of products though their dealers to do
just that. But the company is sending out a warning
shot that they will be voiding warranties if it is
determined that modifications made by the owner are
the cause of failures.

Good info, but it's, uh, been pretty well known for at least two weeks now.

It may be that Ford is becoming more "diligent" on looking for mods, but it doesn't change warranty law that is already in place.

Wishfull thinking dude. Personally I have no fear of swapping my 08 for a 5.0 in couple years. Tuners will have it figured out long before then.

He's got north of 500whp. It's not like he'll have problems beating a lot of 5.0 cars in the first place. They will need something more than bolt ons to hang with that more than likely.
