Did your builder set up the engine looser for a heavier oil? Why run the heavier oil. I am running 5-20 in mine still.

I'm also a 5w-20 guy. I had the clearances set up for it. IMO it's a no brainer to run factory clearances and 5w-20. All too often the internet is full of people suggesting thicker oil for a modern motor with it's tight clearances. It's just one of those things that most people don't understand. The oil has to keep parts separated via the oil wedge. Ford spent a lot of time and money figuring out what will do that best. Modern manufacturing allows for tighter tolerances which means the old viscosities don't work so well. I'm sure that he thought 10w-30 was protecting the motor better than 5w-20. It's an expensive lesson.

OP have you pulled a few cam caps to see if they were affected? The cams don't have bearings. They rely on an oil wedge to prevent metal to metal contact.

Nope I was running 10w30. I haven't touched it since I pulled the pistons last night. The main I pulled looked good but I will check a few cam caps as well

I would not blame the oil, more prone to something out of spec.

What do you think, all the rod bearings were out of spec in the rods, bearings, or crank?

OP do you have any plastigage? You could put some of the bad parts back together and see where it's at in the unaffected areas if there are any.

No I don't have that. I did have the crank polished but I thought that didn't take any material away. The bearings don't fit in the rods or anything now though. The heat has altered the bearings some

The mains weren't spun but had a little wear. The rods on the other hand were trashed. It had went through layers of the bearings

I don't know what to think, not experienced enough, the only thing I know is that all the engines we bought from two very reputable engine builders had stock tolerances assembled with new parts and we only ever used 10W30 per their request. I don't buy the 5W20 thing when the same Ford told customers outside the US (who can get any oil they want, as we did back then) to use 30 oil instead. When you got a new mustang in latin america, the original manual said 5W30 instead of 5W20 (I can scan it for you if you want). Also, local Ford, always serviced 3Vs in F-150/Explorer and mustang with Motorcraft blend 5W30. And finally, 5.4 4V engines use the same clearance spec of the 3V in rod/main bearing to crank and comes with 5W50.

I've never used in a customer car or mine 5W20, never.

But as I said, I am not experienced enough. So, only my .02.

Probably a 10W was not good in current weather? maybe, I don't know.

What I think is that if mains are good, don't think it was an oil issue.

Looks rods are toast now so don't how effective would it be to measure them. I would get boss rods or manley turn the crankshaft and plastigauge them at install and sort them.

I'm going to add the 13 GT500 pan and pickup. Here's the pictures of the main bearings and area on the journals and also the foreign material I was speaking of. (Fucking sand)

how did all that shit get in your engine? Looks like this failure was due to foreign material getting into the engine somehow

Sand blasting material stuck under the baffle is my guess. I cleaned it out prior to installing but I didnt think pressure washing it was necessary. I guess I was wrong.

Oh god damnit, took a brave man to admit that. Getting all the grit out is damn near imposible. I would put different covers on for sure.

Probably just going to remove the baffle to clean it. The bad part is you couldnt see any of that before putting it on...
