Cause for $150 I can buy new rods lol

Or for $300 I can buy h beams with ARP bolts. It just doesnt make sense to have $300 in a set of boss rods with bolts.

Congrats buddy, hope to see good things from you soon. 9's or bust!

RJ, I'd want to make sure every entire inch of the block and heads gets flushed out before you put that thing back together. I'd think one piece of sand could still not live very happily in a freshened up block. Are you going to have to do anything piston/ring/bore wise or is it just bearings and crank? How do the cams look? If you need another set of stock cams, I could hook you up since mine are out of the car now. Let me know.

Also does anyone know where I can buy new rod bolts? I dont want ARPs

I wonder how 12.9 metric bolts would hold up? You could do some research into tensile strengths of different materials. Have you tried Summit or Jegs to see what's available?

Yeah all they carry are ARP2000 rod bolts and they are like 140 per set. Are the factory boss ones not 8740 like the lower end ARPs?

I just checked a boss rod bolt. It's M10 x 1 and has an underhead length of about 1.75".

The arp 8740 bolts have a tensile strength of 180k and the 2000 are 200k. I'm going to check some fastener stores and see what they have.

A little more checking and a 12.9 hardness is 176k psi which is almost the same as a 8740 bolt. 14.9 is 199k which is almost the same as a 2000. That is if I got the metric conversion factor correct.

The boss rod bolts are a different size than the arp2000 that are in my h beams so I'm not so sure that the arp would work unless they have a direct replacement for stock rods.

What would you go on as far as what kind of lube and what torque using a non automotive bolts?

That's a good question. Torque should be dependent upon lubrication, size, and thread pitch. There are many online guides to torque values. I'd be inclined to use 30 weight oil and Manley torques. Manley specs are from 50 - 65 ft lbs for 3/8 arp bolts. 50 - 60 for the 8740 and 55 - 65 for the 2000.

http://manleyperformance.com/dl/tech/rod-hbeam.pdf

For a 12.9 I'd use 8740 data and 14.9 would get the 2000 data. I'd also cross reference with data for M10 x 1.0 fasteners in their respective grades just to make sure.

I wonder if Sam 19COBRA93 would be able to get replacement bolts for the boss rods? That would probably be the best bet.

Seem safe? Idk that just seems cheap for the amount of money spent on the rest of the car...

I figured you were going somewhere. I'd definitely be researching the properties of the different bolts before using them. Tensile strength is only one part of the equation. It is a good place to start though.

It's not the fact that I'm going trying to go cheaper, it's more or less relative to the price of the rods. Because if I'm gonna be spending $150 for some damn bolts I might as well go with those h beams. Just trying to explore my options.

It'd be nice if ford would just sell some damn bolts.
