Thanks, Ed! The steering shaft is my concept, executed by the cage builders. It is indeed 3/4" solid rod, Heim joint with shaft collars for support and location. We cut the stock shaft right at the flex coupler, then welded the rod onto that. We did that to retain the factory telescope section inside the car, just in the event of a MAJOR out-of-talent incident.

The whole idea is to keep the rod from launching into your chest, so we have the stock telescoping section (slip joint) between the rack and the firewall, footwell intrusion bars from the firewall to the A-pillar uprights on the cage, then the other stock telescoping section in the column between the firewall and the solid rod. I feel pretty safe with that setup, despite having the tech at Woodward describe it as "street car junk." OTOH, he was trying to sell me not just a column, but the intermediate shaft AND a rack as well... Bottom line is that it's stock from the flex-coupler (for the tilt) all the way forward to the rack.

ABS: Interesting. I was ASSuming that with the CAN bus there was bi-directional communication between the PCM and the ABS to do the traction-control nonsense, and I could see all KINDS of hell breaking loose there with the different PCM. Maybe I'll just cut the CAN wires and see if everything mysteriously sorts itself out...

It has been a fun (and frustrating!) build. The cage came out great, I think, and everything passed tech first time through. I have a TON of room between the door bars and the seat mount, and in general, overbuilt wherever I could. Full-length A-pillar and B-pillar gussets, gusset bars from the halo to the main hoop, as well as from the halo to the A-pillar. Single diagonal in the rear stays, and the tubing itself is 0.125 wall, rather than 0.120. I did the design with the AI rule book in one hand, but flat ran out of money to really optimize the setup in terms of power. With a weight of 3338, I *THINK* I'm in range of hitting "the numbers" with just cams. I just don't see pouring cams/heads/etc. into a 4.6 when the 5.0 is so cheap to swap in. Bone stock motor, with just intake/exhaust bolt-ons netted me 313/331. The weight (at the 9.5/9.0 with the ABS) would give me a max of 351/370. If I come up a touch short on the dyno, I know where I can find another 35 lbs or so, to bring the numbers down to 347/367. I think that should be a viable target. Comp 127500 perhaps?

Now I will admit, I am NOT building this as an AI car: my focus is on the endurance series, but AI is currently the most open rule set in the E0 class: 9.5:1 power, 9.0:1 torque, essentially unlimited aero and suspension, but a max of 275mm DOT legal rubber. If not AI, then I'm fighting the PTB or ST3 rule sets. Who knows, though, I might slap on some Toyos and come out to play once in a while!

looks like alot of fun. cant wait to get my stang so i can start again.

I'll make my first post ever on this board to say that yes, this car is a lot of fun. Thanks again Dave for utilizing me as a co-driver. Now if I can just find a way to run faster than you in your own car...

Ahhh! Everybody give Joe a warm welcome! He's been driving a Civic Si (podiumed at Nationals with it!) for a long time, but then he got the Mustang disease... He and I co-own and co-drive a '94 Cobra in Camaro-Mustang Challenge, and he's my go-to guy for the Enduros, as well!

As far as running faster than me, in my own car, ain't gonna happen! Oh, wait, you did beat my PB at Autobahn in the CMC car, didn't you? Okay, if you DO run faster than me, I just want the data!

Joe, that Enduro was soooo much fun! My only goal was to finish the race, and for us to podium overall, AND set a track record doing it, was just beyond my expectations. Thanks.

Nice looking build, sounds like a nice plan. I bought my 05 as a log-booked AI car. It has the 4.6, stock 3650 trans, and weighed 3400lbs with me in it. I never had it on the dyno, but the prior owner said it dyno'ed around 330hp with FRPP hotrod cams, long tube headers, no cats, etc.. I decided to sell the engine/trans/etc., gutted the car, and am rebuilding with my 342 small block stroker and tko600 trans. I'm optimistic that I'll come in somewhat lighter (hoping so anyway), might actually get the car on the ground this weekend and on the scales to see how close I'll be. My engine made around 360/360 on the fox, but these headers are smaller, so my HP might be down a bit compared to before....

Regarding the steering, I seriously considered doing exactly the same thing, but ended up using the stock setup so far... Looking at the length of the steering shaft I'm guessing you moved the seat back some? Keep the same pedal arrangement? I had to fab a accelerator pedal since I'm running a carb... My seat is back nearly to the main hoop, made some spacers for the stock pedal pads so I could reach 'em...

Ed: I know Steve Poe has gutted them down to right around 3000lbs, so it CAN be done... My 3308 was "race weight," with 150lbs of me in the seat, 27lbs in the right-rear for the cool-suit rig, and 3/8 tank of fuel. I'm still running the stock K-member, and the main interior brace over the shocktowers is still in place as well, so there's got to be 35lbs easy there. I'm running the stock pedal location, no spacers or blocks, and because I built the car as an enduro machine, the seat is on sliders... The seat-base is at a slight angle, so when you slide back, it also drops, to accomodate the taller driver. The wheel works out to be about 1" further from the dash than the stock wheel position, which is my preference. When my sponsor and I were scaling the car, we played with seat position, and there was actually surprisingly little shift running the seat back and forth, less than 10lbs IIRC.

I've been following your build here and on CC with some interest, and it looks like it should be KILLER once it's done! I'm not going to go to Nationals, but if we bump into each other (Mid-Ohio?) we need to sit down and have some beers...

Philo: Yup, the off-season is going to be interesting! I'm 99% sure I'm in for cams, splitter and wing, oh, and a fuel cell to cut down the number of fuel stops! The trans is going to have to wait another year, I'm afraid... I did all the math, and unfortunately, the piece with the "right" ratios for me is made of "unobtainium" and costs like it... Are you back in-country again?

I'm still in the middle of the Mediterranean...believe it or not, they are hosting a vintage Grand Prix this week, so we got to see some old race cars in M'dina, Malta. Should be back w/in 24 hrs...just int time to get slammed with work.

But I'm definitely in for winter work. There's a bit of overlap in our off-season plans, so that should help. Looking forward to it.

What a great read!!! I've never been a corner carver, but you had me "in the story", and in the car with you. Nice way to spend Sunday morning with a cup of coffee...

Great to hear you are back on the track, Dave! Sounds like there will be some fun winter projects planned. Although, do the projects ever end with a track car? :naughty1:

Thanks, all! It was a GREAT end to the racing season, and I stumbled across this yesterday:

I think that sums it ALL up!

 Jeez.... Get "meatballed" a couple times in a day for a self-ejecting hood pin, and you act like it's important or something!

FWIW, New pins were installed prior to last weekend! No more meatballs for me!

Haha. Actually, I was referring to that pic at RA. I know you've explained why your hood bows a bit, but that still looks concerning. Maybe its the angle of the shot, but i don't remember it being that noticable
