Bought a set of Pypes long tubes for my 12 GT.

Brought them to a shop and had them install them back in August.

Had some issues, like banging and an exhaust leak so brought it back and had them throw it on a lift.

The driver's side header is angled downward. It's about 1.5 inches lower than the passenger side header.

There are two cracks, one on the actual header and one on the joint between the header and X pipe.

I know I can return them and get a different set from Pypes... Maybe. It's up to them to determine its a manufacturing defect or not. But I don't have the tools to take them off, put my stockers back on, and then a week or two later put a new set (of, presumably the same quality) of headers back on. Id have to pay a shop to do this. We're talking about 800 to take the old ones off and then put the new ones on when they get here.

Should I have the shop angle the header so it's not at an extreme angle? Because of this angle, the X pipe hangs is offset and hangs lower on the driver's side and gets torn up from speed bumps and driveways. Is it possible for them to cut/weld the header or modify this in any way? I feel like the car is losing power because of the exhaust leak, or is that not the case? Best case it's throwing my A/F off, correct?

What I want to do is get a set of Kooks. What I can afford is a different story.

Call Pypes and tell them you want a refund and buy a different set. JBA's are affordable and fitment seems spot on. Just curious, and believe me I do know the difficulty of DIY on these headers cause I did mine myself but you can't put them on yourself?

I'd get it returned shouldn't have a fitment issue, you paid for them.
I got some pypes LT's and no fitment issues so i'm sure they can make it work.

I have installed multiple sets on different cars without a single issue. It sounds like you got a defect. Call them and explain the situation. Send them pics and see if they will send you out a replacement so you can swap it and send the defective header back.

I would like to see the picks as well. Every set I have installed tuck nicely on both sides. Very close to the same location as the stock setup.

Did you hit something or run over something? I would have expected on the initial install to be amiss enough you would have brought the issue up with Pypes then.

Shop that did never said anything about it to me.

I have no problem RMA'ing it. My issue would be to: take them off/put stockers back on. Send LT's back to Pypes/wait for new set once Pypes receives my old set. Get new LT's in, take off recently installed stockers/put back on LT's.

I'm stuck paying a shop to take them off and put them back on. I don't have a garage/proper tools to do it myself. Or the time.

I guess I'm just mad that I get a defective set and it's going to cost me 800 dollars to remedy the problem.

I might just have them fixed, or see what the shop can do and save up for Kooks...

man that really sucks! that is simply too much cost to eat, I'd get a full refund if possible, or try to get Pypes to split the install labor with you, but fat chance there. and don't think that Kooks are the "end all, be all" they have fitment issues as well, maybe not as often but it does happen.

What I said was call Pypes, see if they will send you a replacement, swap them out and send the defective piece back. They will want pics and proof of purchase I am sure.

Since you have to take pics it may be beneficial to post them here.

Charlotte.

WBT, I did. They'll send me theirs when They get mine. I didn't expect any other arrangement. Even when I RMA computer hardware for my clients, the companies want the part before they send a new one. It has never mattered if its a 20 dollar part or 2000. If I don't have a relationship, they won't send me the part until they get theirs.

Can you throw a second set of headers on a credit card and then get Pypes to credit your card when they get the defective headers back? That way you can still do the swap in one trip instead of two, half the labor. And with the 30-45 day float on your credit card it won't actually cost you anything extra.

I've been credit card free for almost two years now... But I've been thinking about getting one again. This header thing has given me another reason to get one again.

Btw, Rocky is great.

Do you trust the shop that installed your headers? Possible they may have damaged the headers pre/during install?

IF the headers were that bad to start with then then any shop worth a fck should have said so, or at least asked you how you felt about riding around like that. They may have tried to short cut the job too, prying them into place.

I would ask for a replacement at no cost and send them a copy of your labor bill and ask for the money back. If they don't agree ask for a complete refund. That's what I would do...may not work but worth a shot

Ill give Mike a call. I don't remember who I talked to yesterday, but he told me the standard 'you ship us the defective part and when we receive it, we'll ship you a new set'

The shop I went to did subpar work. I now go to Prodyno in SC and they do excellent work. They've fixed several issues caused by the first shop.

That's why I went with pypes. Good design and kept reading the quality was spot on. It's my shit luck that I get a set that's not on par with the quality I expected. I blame my ignorance on not closely inspecting the parts before having them installed.

I will post pictures later today. Please learn from my mistake - closely inspect your parts. Even a quality manufacturer will ship out defective parts every once in awhile.

Still not clicking for me. How long after the install did the car make it before you started having issues? I can tell you my Pypes LT's and Pypes O/R X will *not* fit together for shit if one of the headers were 1-1/2" out of spec. My mid-pipe unbolted from the headers rests on the collectors. 1-1/2" up/down/front/back/side and I would have to force the midpipe or modify it. That said, if the headers were out of spec from the initial install by 1-1/2" it would be ignorant not to notice. If the headers failed after install, at what point did you notice an exhaust leak/banging sound?

I'm only pushing this because like any manufacturer/business they will likely try to determine cause of failure. If they inspect those broken welds and find the metal was thin or lacked fusion it will be obvious and you're in the clear. If they find the primaries were dented/forced and the weld was stressed or ripped/torn they will likely call you and tell you they don't warranty improper installation (or damaged during installation).

Totally possible you got a bunk set of headers, and if so I would ask for them to cover your labor cost/shipping. Never hurts to ask. I'd just hope they don't say it was damaged upon installation. I'm sure they'll still work with you, but you'll eat all the bills.
