A few weeks ago I noticed my Whipple 2.3 was making a noise louder than normal. I initially thought it was coming from the rear bearing but now it looks like its may be coming from the front bearing or snout. Nevertheless, I'll be removing the blower and sending it off service. I could send it off to Whipple to the tune of $950 plus shipping or Jon Bon Performance $650 plus shipping for the same service. Anyone ever have similar issues.

Gen 1, I replaced the snout a while ago. The oil in the blower is really dark brown. I didn't have time to remove the head unit today but will soon. This definitely puts my motor build on hold. I think I'm gonna send it off to Jon Bon.

ok we have similar units....i think i replaced my snout in 2008. my sc oil started to get discolored a few years ago so i replaced it with fresh. still looking clean today.

hoping this is not going to become a common occurance for us Gen1 guys.

I just had the car tuned on the dyno, tuner noticed it but said he wasn't to concerned about it. The blower was still making boost pretty easily and everything went smooth on the dyno so I guess that's kinda of good news.

If the snout bearings are done I wonder if whipple could provide a rebuilt snout on an exchange basis? Just call 'em up.

If the bearings behind the drive gears are toast then it has to go away.

This is on eaton units - based on drawings I've seen of the whipple's they are the same.

There is nothing that I see in the Gen 1 Whipple manual regarding sending the blower back to Whipple for recommended interval service . It states intervals for checking actuator @ 10K miles, plugs, etc and change the oil every 100k miles. Have you talked directly with Mike @ Whipple?? I had a leak in the intercooler and they replaced the intercooler and checked everything for shipping fees.

IIRC whipple has a recommended interval for sending the unit in as well.

What is the interval? I can't remember anything about it either. I've had my Whipple on there for about 3 years and 15K or so miles.

I'll check on the intervals for service but I think it has to do more with the oil change and actuator like Ray says. I removed the blower what PITA but simple. I also checked the blower and everything seems to spin freely no binding at all! I'll post pics of the oil as soon as I drain it, along with intercooler, and internals.

Here are a few pics! Looks like I'm having some snout trouble, it binds a little when it spins.

No bueno!

Coupler looks ok.

Snout is toast. You may be able to re-build it. But replacements aren't very expensive.

Yeap, I'm going new for sure! The blower itself spins freely and it very smooth. I've got to clean out the internals of the front case but have no idea how to do this. Do I just remove those bolts in the front of the blower?

Yep, it's easy peasy. Pop the front cover off. Clean it all out with brakekleen, seal it back up, fill it with oil and let it rip!
