I’m new to the whole Windsor vs Romeo block stuff and I can only find info on 90s block differences. I have a 06 aluminum 3v out of a mustang. Is there just one type? Or how do I tell what one I have?
Aluminium 4.6L 3V blocks were cast at the Romeo engine plant and are unique to 05-10 Mustangs with 4.6L engines. They're one of the strongest 4.6L Modular blocks available (including the Teksid aluminium and Cobra "Terminator" cast iron blocks) and are capable of handling over 1000hp.
Mustang 4.6L 2-valve cast iron blocks came in the following flavours:
96-98 GT: Romeo
99-00 GT: Windsor
01-04 GT: Romeo (including 01 Bullitt)
Mustang 4.6L 4-valve blocks came in the following flavours:
96-98 Cobra: Teksid, aluminium
99-01 Cobra: Windsor, aluminium
03-04 Cobra "Terminator": Romeo, cast iron
03-04 Mach 1: Windsor, aluminium
The 05-10 3V blocks share the same main bearing shells as the 96-98 Cobra, 99-01 Cobra, and 03-04 Mach 1 aluminium blocks whereas the main bearing shells of all cast iron Mustang blocks are different, so it's important to know that when ordering these parts.
Also note that the 05-10 Mustang 3V engine came with a 6 bolt crank, and that's important to know when ordering an aftermarket flywheel because Windsor engines came with an 8 bolt crank.
