So I just recently had a hellion 61mm turbo kit installed last week and today when i went to start the car to go home from class, it made a ticking sound, kinda like when old cars valvetrain tick and then go away once warmed up, but this wasnt coming from the motor, seemed to come by the tranny or wheel well. (Keep in mind it did not make this sound on my way to class) The ticking sound would increase with revs, so im thinking exhaust..Well i drove it home and when i would get into boost it would hesitate, or seem like it jerked (only in boost). The flow of boost wasnt constant and smooth like it should be. I also floored it and you couldnt really notice the jerking, you could only really notice it when boosting 1/2 or 3/4 throttle .Also when i got home the car still seemed to make that wierd ticking sound but quieter?? Could this be a boost leak? what makes me believe it isnt is that it happened all of the sudden. I got to school and the car was PERFECTLY fine. Once i got out of class and went to start it, is when it started ticking? Any idea, thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a massive exhaust leak. The hellion kit hangs low check all the exhaust connections

sounds like valvetrain(broken follower)
i really hope not :(, but something with the valvetrain was first thing that came to my mind when i heard it. I searched on google and found that a broken follower could cause fuel cuts, which it does kinda feel like when under boost, it hiccups/ jerks.. I would imagine this is an expensive fix?

This is what im hoping it is... What kind of struck me though was that it didnt do it when i shut the car off. Or unless it was there and i didnt hear it, but it for sure didnt make that sound when i started it cold when i left my house. I wouldnt think a leak wouldnt occur so suddenly, but idk.

I would first check all your exhaust connections, while you are doing that, make sure none of the tubing is contacting the frame, sheetmetal, etc. After I installed my turbo and drove the car for the first week, the downpipe shifted slightly and started touching the k-member, causing a ticking noise at certain engine loadings.

If the exhaust looks good, it may be a bad follower........how many miles are on your engine? When I had one go bad on me, it ticked non-stop, regardless if the engine was cold/hot etc.

Good luck!

I've replaced a few of them in mine. Common thing to go. It's really not hard to swap out either. Infact, I have to do one in mine today.

ok it i stopped ticking...........for GOOD.....went out to go get a leak test, got into boost to feel the hesitation, and BOOM, white smoke everywhere!!:pissed1:, i guess the sound was something in the bottom end that was ticking

Could the "ticking" you heard be ignition pinging/detonation? Did the car have a solid tune in it? Sorry to hear about your engine failure......white smoke is often times coolant, maybe you just popped a head gasket?

It could have been that. I got under the car before i went out and the ticking seemed to be coming from the the bottom end of the engine , around the oil pan. never did i think it was the bottom end that was doing that though. I had the kit installed & tuned by Mike@ midatlantic and have heard good things about hence why i went with him. And yes it most likely was coolant but the engine started making all kinds of horrible noises and shut it off immediately. went back in a friends car and found a piece of the block that had blown off

Damn! that really sucks. Was the car dyno tuned and how much boost were you running?
yes it was dyno tuned by Mike @mid atlantic performance. made 470hp & 473tq @ 8psi. this was on a dynojet. I dont think it was the tune though, i guess i was just lucky enough to get a motor that wouldnt hold the power. It ran spot on for the first few days before it blew
