Dang Ron.
Well i pulled the 2 rearward main caps today. One bearing looks shot, the other looks ok to me. Even with both main caps removed, I still cannot spin the motor
Should I put these caps back, and take out others, leave these out and continue taking the rest out? Any suggestions?
sry I havent read all the thread 94T but what caused the bearings damage? I know your engine doesnt spin too ..
To continue going this route, you'd need to pull the drive shaft, unbolt the trans cross-member while supporting the trans with a jack. Disconnect any wiring not long enough to move a couple of inches from the engine and trans. Remove the hardware from the engine mounts and then, lift the engine off the mounts to gain clearance to the other cap bolts while lowering the trans slightly to maintain bellhousing clearance from the body of the car.
It sounds like a lot of work, but actually, it's pretty easy to do. Just go slow. Steering components may need to be removed for clearance. I've done this on a few cars and a couple of trucks, but not on an S197. Damn I wish I were close to you so I could give ya a hand.

Wish I knew. Looking for opinions on what to do/check next. Still trying to figure out a way to spin motor so I dont need to pull trans or drop kmember. Very difficult to do on your back
What if the oil pump gears shattered and jammed up the pump?

Sorry to see the damage. F'n cars. :/

The easy answer is loss of the oil wedge. Finding out what caused that is the tricky part. Bearing clearance, oil viscosity for that clearance, defective bearing, too much heat causing reduced bearing clearance, excessive runout in the crank, a straightened crank that decided it wanted to go back to it's original shape. I'm sure there are other reasons too.
Ron, What happened to the local volunteers you had to help pull the motor?
does the crank move even a little?
not 1 mm
