EPAS Terrible Shudder

Did you change your wheels at the same time as your brakes?

No, wheels were first change from CS 19" x 8.5" to 20" x 9". Shudder started with A arms and bump steer; likely combo of changes caused it. Took off bump steer and shudder gone. Much later, big brakes and shudder was worst ever. Changed to Boss 302R rack and shudder disappeared.

What brakes did you use? I'm planning on using the Ford Racing 4-piston Brembos.

Those are some freaking huge brakes and calipers. I wonder if the smaller Ford Racing ones would be OK...

I just started getting this shudder badly after replacing the transmission and PCM with a 6R80. Car has 15k miles. Had never had it before.

Front QA1 coilovers, and 17" Weld RT-s skinnies. Never had the shutter until the PCM/Trans chnage though.

those of you out there who said they have had contacts with industry or ford insiders about this EPAS issue... is it possible that you can tell me who they were and would they be willing to discuss the problem if contacted? i want to start compiling info and hard data in hopes of finding a resolution to our problems, whether it be a cost-effective aftermarket fix or a TSB or whatever...

Off the record I spoke with a few Ford company people about this issue, in person and the off the record answer was that Ford will never issue a TSB, Firmware upgrade or recall for this. The best that Ford Racing could do was offer the EPAS rack as an off road only part. Liability in changing the programming for street use and cost was given as the reasons. I cannot give up the source and will not (he would deny it anyway), but I believe the gang at Rehagen would corroborate this info.

If you have issues on unmodified street car then by all means pursue warranty repair claim with Ford, just don't expect them to give you a M-3200-EPAS rack as a replacement. If you have modified the suspension from stock expect them to fight any warranty claim related to this issue.

You're right; I'll have to remember not to respond to idiotic comments by needy people trying to make themselves feel competent.

My post was a nice, constructive clarification. Someone read it to jewC and he dictated a smart-arse remark that he couldn't keep under control. I should have stopped there, as now it seems clear that whoever is reading posts to him is not making a true translation; he probably isn't really that dense or mean. They're trying to make him look bad, and it seems to be working.

after all of this, it dawned on me that the only parts left that are stock on my front suspension are the front knuckles... i guess that means no warranty. sigh.

i tried to make a video using a smartphone to show how much shaking is going on on the highway and almost killed myself when it hit. i'm usually holding on to the steering wheel for dear life with both hands and when i tried to one-hand it and hold the phone with the other the car tried to cross the divider on me.

i'll try again on a side road tomorrow.

Neither number is correct. The EPAS is an M-3200-EPAS. The M-5300 would be a set of lowering springs.

How difficult is it to install the rack? About how many hours would a shop charge? I don't have ready access to a lift...

when i was at the dealer they did not answer my question on what book time was for them because they said the rack was not the issue... i've been concentrating on shopping for a rack and haven't started looking for an independent shop yet. at this point i don't really feel like giving my money to a ford dealer to fix something that ford did wrong.

4 hours should be more than enough time lying on your back. We just pulled one from our Grand-am car in about a half hour, lying on the floor.

OK, lemme ask it this way. If I were to drive my car to either of your shops, how many hours of labor would you charge me to R&R the EPAS rack?

It shouldn't be much more than a 2-hour labor rate. We do not offer labor/install here....but it is definitely not a hard task to replace a steering rack, IMO.
