There are two small "flaps" (sorry, I don't know the technical term) on the underside of the mustang. Each one is behind the driver/passenger, just in front of the gas tank. They look like they are designed to separate the air flow from the car, before it gets all messed up in the gas tank/axle jungle.

Has there been any airflow testing done with these pieces removed or replaced with something larger to increase their effect?

I am pretty sure you are talking about the rock deflectors.

when rocks get kicked up under the car they stop the rocks from making nasty annoying noises against the gas tank and damaging it.

if there is any aerodynamic value I have no idea. I just don't mess with them.

Well, that makes more sense then I what I was thinking they were for. That also explains why they're rubber.

If you install a tunnel brace, or sub frame connector's, the flaps are removed.

He already posted above, about the ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL tunnel bracing and subframe connectors...

I don't trust any of the various one piece AL DS's. The BMR tunnel brace also supports the BMR DS safety loop. You require some kind of brace, etc to support the safety loop. BMR provides transverse slots in their tunnel brace, so the safety loop can be centered correctly around the DS. The loop is tall enough to allow full suspension travel in either direction.

The chromolly SFC's were bolted + welded in....and just an experiment.
