At the risk of sounding like a bigger idiot than I already do, what do you mean by "backhanding" the gear?

.

Already been covered, but this is a good practice to do on the "down" gears. I always forward hand the "up" gears. Never hold the shifter with a closed grasped hand while shifting. Stuff like the OP tends to happen when you do that...

Sad to see, but good this guy walked away without a scratch. It does cost but I suggest ON track insurance when it can be afforded.. Hartland Insurance Group or Bill Lutz over on the bullet.

And that gentleman is why you backhand 4th gear.

I didn't know anyone shifted any other way into 4th...

I didn't even know you could get a insurance for racing. I just filled out a forum for a price quote. I wonder how much something like this is.

Owie. That sucks. A lot.

There is a reason why I stuck to autocross for a year before open tracking mine.

That's why I told Mason he needs to do some autocross or some road track racing on a flat track with no walls to learn how to control the car in the event of a spin. If you don't know how your car feels when it spins you will have a hard time controlling it in a real world event.

Sucks for this guy, this is one of my biggest fears.

This sounds great, my plan with my daughters is basically the same, take them to the track soon with the Fiesta and play with it there, and if it rains, even better.

The only risk you face is him losing interest in the drags, I never looked back, if you don't have to brake and turn, doesn't light my fire. ;-)

Mine was around 1k/year for 50k in coverage with a 5k deduct, good down to a 7.90 ET. Pricing will depend on your coverage amount and ET you are insured own to. Not a bad price considering a person could end up making payments for 5 years on a scrap heap if things go wrong.

Thats not bad at all. I have an 06 GT and the fastest run to date is 12.00 (it should be in the 11's) and I know its not worth no 50k.

They quoted me over $800 for 20k in coverage and a 5k deduct. I can subtract $450 if I just want "race only coverage" the $800 includes the return lane, as well as the pit. I can't see anything crazy happening in either, so I'd prob only do the race only coverage.

I think the non-racing part covers time on the trailer/etc. Like you I'd be most worried about the "race only coverage" and get that. My normal auto insurance policy only excludes "while actively racing on a track at a sanctioned or nonsanctioned event" or something like that. So hopefully your regular insurance would cover you on the return road and in the pits.

Wish mine was only $450...jealous

This was a quote I got this spring with a stated vehicle value of $40,000.

This is for on track coverage. I did not get this year, but may get it next year, if I decide to cage it and actually get to the strip.

I am probably going with Lutz for insurance. It is stupid but Hartand's insurance program says 80% of your events have to be 1/4 mile and only 20% 1/8th mile. If more than 20% of your events are 1/8th mile they charge almost double and remove fire insurance. It is ass backwards, I tried to explain to them that people drive PAST the 1/8th mile to get to the 1/4 so 1/8th is not inherently more dangerous/risky for slow people such as myself, but their underwriter doesn't get it.

Appears they had some promods (who were 1/8th cars) burn down in the water box and they had to pay out many 100k's of dollars so now they think 1/8th is bad, even for slow cars like us.

Yea, If I'm going to do it, it would just be for race only.

That seems high.

LOL! I had the same conversation with them via email. It was so confusing why they charge more for the 1/8. I usually only go to the atco, which is the 1/4 anyway.
