Well my next major mod will probably be to upgrade my transmission to a 4r70w so I can actually enjoy my car without the fear of blowing up my 5r55s! I have a one year old fully built Level 10 tranny and billet convertor "rated" to 1000hp but we all know better than that! Had I known then (when I bought it) what I know now I never would have invested the money, since it would have been only about $1,000 more for a good 4r70w. Anyway I've started doing some research on 4r70w's and learned a lot so far, one thing I need to figure out though is lock up vs non-lock up. Which is better and why? I understand lock up is more rugged, but lock up may put a little more power to the ground? Either way will be manual valve body with trans brake.

Lock up ftw. If you spend the cash on a circle d converter that is multi disc lock up u can put more power to the ground with wot lock up. Also the trans will run cooler when locked up during cruising conditions

Lock up if you are doing a MVB. I opted for the non lockup for mine though sense I wanted a AVB and TB. I was told by Len at Lentec that I couldn't have all three and I knew I wanted a AVB and the brake so non lockup it was. For my uses it works fine for me. I could gain a little MPH in the 1/4 with a lockup converter. If I had it to do again I would have a AVB and lockup. Another advantage to a non lockup is the large input shaft though which is stronger.

Today I spoke with both Lentech and FB Performance, Lentech recommended non lockup with the one piece bullet input shaft and 2.40 first gear for durability, FB recommended lockup for my application. Both were for MVB with transbrake. Lentech did spend a little more time explaining everything to me, and said they have cars making 1200 rwhp with that combo and no problems. FB offers all the parts to do the swap too, harnesses for lockup, transbrake, etc., everything except the DS. Lentech is about $750 more. IDK. I'll have to ask about power ratings and if there's any kind of warranty from both.

If you get the Lentec, why not get the AVB? You can still shift when you want to.

fb performance told me I couldnt use my existing flex plate

I think it depends on the style flexplate you have, I bought an 8 bolt SFI when I built my motor last year but it didnt fit my convertor, figured that out after wrestling with it for a couple hours! ARgh! I ended up having to buy a $600 PA SFI flexplate from Summit that's OEM style to fit my OEM style billet convertor. I figure I should be able to use that first flexplate I bought for my swap, although I did enlarge the bolt holes slightly before I realized it was the wrong part entirely. I'll have to see about that, probably not worth taking a chance over a couple hundred bucks. Also, I read somewhere The Driveshaft Shop / DSS will make driveshafts for this swap, it's not on their site but they will make it if you ask, I assume in either aluminum or CF.

Edit: FB sells everything for the swap, including the dipstick $125 option. Cross member adapter $125, etc.

IIRC they told me with AVB I would have to get the controller that costs about $900 more plus the harnesses and program it. I can manually shift to save a grand, lol. Does your Lentech shift instantly when you manually shift it? I ask b/c my 5r55s has like a second delay, it's really annoying.

Dip stick from an SN95 car with the AODE is what I used. I can get you a drive shaft measurement from my car if you want.

Im still 6 bolt and using a stock flex plate with a circle d 245 mm multi disc converter. They are getting the converter back to change it over to 4r70 internals as they told me the front covers are the same.....so im kinda confused now

Billy does your Lentech shift immediately when you shift it or is there a delay? Have you been happy with it over all? Did you have to get an external temp gauge or did your controller allow the temp info to remain active @ the OBD II port?
