Roll cage v.s Harness bar

I am wanting to get new seats and run a harness set up. I have seen lots of cars use just a harness bar with no roll cage. Would that be unsafe since you are stuck upright and if you roll the roof could crush down on you? or does it only really apply to verts?

I was thinking just in general, but I plan on getting into auto cross (gotta beat my cousins turbo miata!) and every now and then hit the strip.

Mainly autocross but will go to the strip here and there.

you're fine with just a harness bar IMO.

if you start to run road course - then you would consider adding a 4 pt bar IMO

You should be fine with just a harness bar for now. You will have one hell of a time beating a turbo Miata in autocross. With their short wheelbase and light weight they are killer at autocross.

Yeah, for autocross I'd be comfortable with just the Corbeau bar as rollover is such a minute possibility. For me, since I'm moving to HPDE, I have gone with the Watson 4-point bar (just waiting on confirmation from JDM and the bar to arrive).

he has no other supporting mods than a turbo, stock suspension tiny tires. so im hoping with he will over drive his car alot. but either way they are some nimble mo-fos

Miatas are stupid fun cars, whether on the autocross, road course, or just spirited DDing. I love mine! But I wish it had a turbo :-/

I agree with what the others have said, unless you start doing serious track days, I'd just go with the harness bar.

honestly look into the god speed kit, its cheap but take the piping and get a better manifold. It makes a great DD kit.

Don't bother with a bar yet. You will use it for ~3 minutes a year unless you're dedicated to racing the car.

I dont plan on it for a good while. I need to learn my car before doing anything to it so I can improve it from there.

I looked at harness bars for my 07' but it wasn't much more money for a roll bar so I went that direction.

And just to clarify common usage of the word "cage" is to describe a roll bar with bars that run along the roof and down the A pillars to the floor. Until then it's just a "bar".

As others have said, for autocross the harness bar would be ok but I would personally not run the harnesses on the street as the chances for roll over there are greater than in autocross. No reason to put yourself into that situation when a 3 point works better in a roll over than any harness does sans cage.

I would only use the harness for autocross, I plan on keeping the factory seat belt in the car for just cruising.

Please explain. As I am pretty sure that racing harnesses in general are not DOT approved and illegal to use on the street. They are ok to have installed as long as you are actually wearing the factory 3 points on the street. In La. If you get stopped wearing a non DOT racing harness on the street you will get ticketed. Of course it's a minor violation, but that's not the point.
