Roll cage v.s Harness bar

Please explain. As I am pretty sure that racing harnesses in general are not DOT approved and illegal to use on the street. They are ok to have installed as long as you are actually wearing the factory 3 points on the street. In La. If you get stopped wearing a non DOT racing harness on the street you will get ticketed. Of course it's a minor violation, but that's not the point.

Some of the harnesses are DOT approved. And all that takes 99% of the time is having the release "button" red like a car seat belt. "They" want anyone to be able to release you from the belts (EMT's, etc) and they are looking for a red release button. Even though most of the time they cut you out.

IMO if you find a cop that is going to mess with you over harnesses he will find al sorts of other stuff on the car to go after. I find it unlikely that a car with harnesses won't have other "illegal" stuff on it.

Of course you will now present the exception.

Wasn't meaning to be argumentative, just as I said in general they are not DOT approved. Yes there are those outrageously priced exceptions that are, but most companies don't spend the money for testing, etc.

As for the illegal stuff on the car your probably pretty close as most have at least an O/R exhaust.

A harness keeps your body fixed relative to the seat back. In a roll over, without a cage, that would mean your head, and spine, get crushed too. With a 3 point (factory seat belt) their is a path of low resistance that the body can move to that prevents spine crushing and death.

If you have a proper roll structure, then by all means, go for it. Wear your DOT approved 4 point on the street, otherwise, I'd avoid it in a street driving incident.

Makes sense.

And if the harness bar isn't installed right, and pulls down a little bit on the shoulders, it could cause a compression injury to the spine in a smaller accident that would have had a much more minor injury. Much more likely on the street than a track, especially an autocross.
